Using Class notes and readings compose a brief essay on each topic below.
All asignments must be typed(except for the Map). Do Not exceed one page 

1. Label map of the Mid-east Region (due: Thursday Oct. 2nd)
2. Discuss the major concepts contained in the Code of Hammurabi.  How have 
these impacted Western Civilization? Explain? due: (10/9/08)
3. What major impact(s) have the Phoenicians and Hebrews had upon Western 
Civilization? Explain? (due: 10/10/08)
Test Essay:     
(Take home for a separate quiz grade.)  Two paragraphs, one page only, 
spelling and grammar are graded components of the essay (use spell check).
* Describe the Assyrian and Persian methods of governing their empires.

1. How were the early Greeks influenced by each of the following: Geography, 
Bronze, Homer, Dorians, and the Olympian gods?
2. Compare Spartan Society (ideas of Lycurgus) to Athenian society(ideas of 
Solon & Cleisthenes).  Which is best and why?
3. Herodotus reading about Thermopylae: What really happened?  How is it 
similar and different from what you have seen and heard?
4. Textbook: read pages 4-9, answer questions 1,3,4,6,7 
 on page 11 (section 1 Assessment)
5. Reading from Thucydides on the Peloponnesian War: (Discuss in three 
paragraphs): 1st, What are the strengths and weaknesses of Thucydides 
history?  2nd, In the funeral oration, what are the strengths of Athens?  
3rd, How do you think Thucydides felt about politics in Greece?
