1. Reading from Thucydides on the Peloponnesian War: (Discuss in three
paragraphs): 1st, What are the strengths and weaknesses of Thucydides
history? 2nd, In the funeral oration, what are the strengths of Athens?
3rd, How do you think Thucydides felt about politics in Greece?

2. In two short paragraphs summarize the beliefs of socrates and Plato.
(Due: 12/3/08)
3. Discuss the beliefs of Aristotle about society and government. How were
his beliefs different from Plato's? Explain in two short paragraphs.
4. Why is alexander the great so great/ Is this justified? What were his
accomplishments? Be sure to discuss hellenistic culture.
5. What is a Republic?How is it different from a democracy? How did the
Roman Republic begin? Who was the founder? What were the circumstances?
6. How did the Roman republic work? Be sure to discuss the roles of the
Senate, Consuls, and all other major officials. What roles were played by
Plebians and patricians ?
7. What were the causes of the Punic wars? How did Rome win the first war?
Why is hannibal so important? How was he defeated in the 2nd war? Why was
there a third war? What longterm impact did the war have upon Roman society?
