GRADING AND CLASSROOM POLICIES Mr. Rembold—Mathematics I sincerely hope this is a great year for you at PVI, and, in particular, in your study of mathematics. CLASS ROUTINE a. Prayer b. Check of assigned practice / drill / cooperative learning c. Development of new material / question and answer / oral practice / assigned practice. d. Summary of material discussed CLASS TIME: New material will be presented by a teacher lead discussion. You will be encouraged to see patterns in the math as its developed, and, sometimes, develop certain rules through discovery. Materials to have with you in class daily would be the text, a notebook for lecture notes, examples provided, and assigned practice. The use of a graphing calculator (TI 82 or 83) is of great value, and, of course, your questions are most valuable. GRADING POLICY: Your grades will be calculated on a percentage basis this year. Each assessment will be given a % grade, and at interim time and at the end of the quarter, the average of those percentages will constitute your grade according to the following weights: TESTS---50% QUIZZES and (or) PROJECTS---30% TARDY/ASSIGNMENT GRADE---10% NINE WEEKS TEST---10% As an example: John’s test grades are 85%; 88%; 91%. This average of 88% is multiplied by .50 making 44 points toward the final grade. John’s quizzes and projects are 90%;95%;85%; and 100%. The average of 92.5% is multiplied by .30 making 27.75 points to add to the previous 44 points. John’s tardy/assignment grade was 41/50 or 82%. This average is multiplied by .10 making 8.2 points to add to the previous subtotal. John’s nine weeks test is 84% which when multiplied by .10 adds 8.4 points to the previous total. Adding together 44+27.75+8.2+8.4 makes John’s final average 88.35% which is a B+ for the quarter grade. If by some chance a nine weeks test is not administered for some reason, the 10% would be added to the test weight changing it from 50% to 60% of the grade for the quarter. In order to create a learning environment that fosters and is conducive to the educational development of all students in a manner consistent with Catholic values, you will be required to write the following statement and then sign after the statement the following--"I have upheld the intent and principles of the Paul VI Academic Honor Code while completing this assignment". CLASS ABSENCES: If you have an excused absence, you must make up all your assignments. It’s your responsibility to find out and complete all assigned work, quizzes, and tests. Assignments will be listed on the website daily. Time allotted for the makeup work is stated in the handbook. For special occasions such as field trips, retreats, sporting events, etc.,please find out what the work will be, read the text, study the given examples, and attempt each problem assigned. If you are absent the day before a scheduled test, and no new material pertaining to this test is presented, then you will be expected to take the test on its scheduled day. If your absence is the day of the quiz / test, then you will make up the quiz / test the day of your return. Try to minimize all absences. They detract from the consistency of study and learning we hope you attain in any course, math or otherwise. Please note: Should a student accumulate six or more absences per quarter in any given course, he / she may receive a failing grade from the teacher—see the handbook. CONCLUSION: It should go without saying, yet I feel I must, that a conscientious student is one who comes to class on time, prepared for the work each and every day, and is one who does their best at all they attempt. They develop respect for themselves and their school by having the maturity and discipline it takes to be in charge. I expect nothing less from each of you. I am available during the week for your assistance, including mornings from 7:10 on and after school any day except those on which there is some type of faculty meeting. If you give your best on a consistent basis, this will be one of the best years you’ve ever had. I look forward to working with each of you. Please take this home and share it with your parent(s) / guardian. After they have read it and discussed it with you, would both of you signs and return it to me.
