added as information becomes available.  Check frequently for updates.

Magistra Lukes or Magister Moore MUST handle ALL PVI REGISTRATIONS.

National Latin Exam
PVI REGISTRATION IS CLOSED.  ALL PVI LATIN STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED 
to PARTICIPATE. Registration and fee has been supported by PVI 
and the World Languages Department. 

2010 NATIONAL LATIN EXAM test information is available. You may 
practice old exams.   EXACT PVI Contest date is to be scheduled 
during the 2nd week in March 2010 during 3rd period.

National Latin Exam

JANUARY 8, 2010  National Mythology Exam
PVI REGISTRATION IS OPEN. The NME is open to ALL 9th-12th GRADERS 
attending PVI.  See Magistra Lukes, Magister Moore, or your PVI 
ENGLISH teacher for details.

PVI registration CLOSES JANUARY 8, 2010.  The Exam will be 
offered AT PVI on a date to be announced in February or March 
2010.  

FEE: $3.

National Mythology Exam

JANUARY 8, 2010 Medusa Mythology Exam
PVI REGISTRATION IS OPEN. The MEDUSA is open to ALL 9th-12th 
GRADERS attending PVI.  See Magistra Lukes, Magister Moore, or 
your PVI ENGLISH teacher for details.

PVI registration CLOSES JANUARY 8, 2010.  The Exam will be 
offered AT PVI on a date to be announced in March 2010.  

FEE:  $3.

Medusa Mythology Exam

JANUARY 8, 2010 Classical Literacy Exam
PVI REGISTRATION IS OPEN.  This is a NEW contest for PVI Latin 
students.  

The site is under construction and periodically changes.  It will 
eventually contain sample questions and matching exercises.  See 
Magistra for additional practice exercises.

PVI registration CLOSES JANUARY 8, 2010.  The Exam will be 
offered AT PVI on a date to be announced during the first week in 
February 2010.  

FEE PAYBLE TO A PVI LATIN TEACHER is 50 cents.

Classical Literacy Exam

FEBRUARY 6, 2010 CAV Tournament Contest
PVI REGISTRATION IS OPEN. The CAV Tournament Contest will be 
offered to PVI LATIN students during the last week in March, 
2010.  Exact date to be determined.  

PVI registration and payment of $3 fee MUST BE MADE 
to the Latin teacher BY FEBRUARY 6, 2010.  

This lengthy contest (1 1/2 hours)of 75 multiple choice questions 
and a sight translation passage has an extensive syllabus which 
may be viewed at the website.  DUE TO ITS LENGTH,THIS CONTEST 
MAY BE OFFERED AFTER SCHOOL.  

FEE is $3.

Classical Association of Virginia (CAV) Tournament Contest

FEBRUARY 6, 2010 CAV Classical (English) Essay Contest
PVI REGISTRATION IS OPEN.  The CAV Classical Essay (English) 
Contest is offered only to PVI Latin students.  Registration, 
payment of fee, and submission of English essay entry MUST BE 
MADE to the Latin teacher NO LATER THAN FEBRUARY 6, 2010.

website requirements will be disqualified.

FEE is $2.

Classical Association of Virginia (CAV) Classical (English) Essay Contest

MARCH 1, 2010  Phaedrus Latin Composition Contest 
PVI REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN.  The program is for high school age 
students, typically 15 to 18 years old. Student entries will be 
due March 1, 2010 to the website.  A top prize of $500 will be 
awarded for first place. Other cash prizes will be given to the 
second- and third-place winners, along with honorable mention 
recognition for other deserving entries.

Participating students will submit a 100- to 200-word original 
fable in Latin, along with an English translation of the 
submitted piece. Compositions will be graded based on the 
student’s ability to accurately use Latin vocabulary and forms of 
speech, the student’s creativity in subject matter and writing 
style.
Phaedrus Latin Composition Contest

March 14, 2010 Bernice Fox Contest
PVI REGISTRATION IS OPEN. The BERNICE FOX is open to LATIN 
students only.  PVI LATIN students MUST SUBMIT entries to the 
Latin Teacher NO LATER THAN MARCH 14, 2010.

teachers decide which entries are sent forward to contest.

Bernice Fox Contest

MARCH 23, 2010 CAV Latin Essay Contest
PVI REGISTRATION IS OPEN.  The CAV Latin Essay (Latin) Contest is 
offered only to PVI Latin students.  Registration, fee, and 
submission of LATIN essay entry MUST BE MADE to the Latin teacher 
NO LATER THAN MARCH 23, 2010.

Classical Association of Virginia (CAV) Latin Essay Contest

MAY 18, 2010 ACL Poster Contest
PVI REGISTRATION WILL OPEN once the ACL website is updated. The 
American Classical League (ACL) Poster Contest is open only to 
PVI Latin students.  POSTERS must be SUBMITTED to the Latin 
teacher NO LATER THAN MAY 18, 2010.  

Three of the posters submitted to the Latin teachers will be 
chosen to be submitted to the national contest at the 64th Annual 
ACL Institute at Wake Forest this coming June.  The theme will be 
stated on the contest's website.  See website or Latin teachers 
for details on size and other requirements.

ACL Poster Contest

MAY 30, 2010  Terence Awards
REGISTRATION AND SUBMISSION IS DIRECTLY TO CONTEST.  Tell PVI 
Latin teachers that you are entering contest.

Cash awards and prizes will be given to those junior high, high 
school, and university students whose videos convey Classics in a 
way that is informative, entertaining, or both. Please see 
website for details on EXTENSIVE entry requirements.

All members of your film production team) must be junior high or 
high school students (grades 6–12) during the period of January 
1, 2009–May 30, 2010.  Videos must be filmed during the same time 
period. Only one submission per student (or student group if 
created as a collaborative project) is allowed.  Submissions must 
be made NO LATER THAN MAY 30, 2010.

NO FEE.

TERENCE AWARDS

CAMWS Latin Translation Contest
PVI REGISTRATION IS CLOSED AND WAS BY INVITATION ONLY.  The 
Classical Association of the Middle West and South (CAMWS) 
offers $250 cash prizes, book awards, and letters of commendation 
to qualifying winners in its School Awards Latin Translation 
Contest.

This year’s competition is open to advanced Latin students only.
The one-hour exam will offer Latin Poetry as exemplified by 
Vergil, Ovid et al. Contestants should translate as literally as 
possible without violating English idiom, and they should know 
the relevant vocabulary presented in Colby’s Latin Word Lists or 
the ACL Basic Latin Vocabulary, since words cited there are 
normally not defined on the test. The examination is intended for 
students who have had at least three years of Latin, but is also 
open to superior second-year students. This exam must be 
administered by a school official other than the Latin teacher 
during the week of November 30 - December 4, 2009.

CAMWS Latin Translation Contest

The Golden Sponge Stick Competition 2009
PVI REGISTRATION CLOSED as of OF NOVEMBER 30, 2009 

This is a NEW contest for PVI.  

If you would like to write your own Roman mystery/detective 
story, here is your chance.  It is a writing contest from the 
United Kingdom which is open to international students.  

Information (regulations, rules, address, etc.) can be found on 
the Roman Mysteries blog.

Let your Latin teacher know you are entering this contest.

The CLOSING DATE of the contest is DECEMBER 10, 2009.  Since your 
entry needs to be mailed to the United Kingdom (England) with 
proper postage for overseas, BE SURE TO HAVE IT MAILED BY 
NOVEMBER 30, 2009.

Golden Sponge Stick Competition 2009

PVI REGISTRATION CLOSED as of DECEMBER 4, 2009 5 p.m. for receipt 
of play by mail to Arena Stage 

Ten-Minute Play Competition

Arena Stage’s annual contest for DC Metro area students in 5th 
through 12th grades.  The play must be original and unpublished.  
A play of 6-10 pages in length must be composed by one person.  
While the topic of play is up to the playwright, it is hoped that 
Latin students will consider a theme related to the ancient 
Romans or Greeks.  Cover sheet and more information on 
requirements are found at website.  Submission must reach Arena 
Stage VIA mail by 5 p.m. on DECEMBER 4, 2009.  Allow ample time 
for mail to reach Arena Stage in time.
