Sociology

  Welcome to Sociology!!! 2008 - 2009

I am looking forward to a great year in this class. I am welcoming back
many previous students and looking forward to meeting many new ones!!

Our textbook is: ESSENTIALS OF SOCIOLOGY: A DOWN TO EARTH APPROACH:
HENSLIN, 5TH EDITION This book is available in our bookstore, as well as at
Murphy's Bookstore.

As stated in the announcements ( see classroom and grading policies)
grading is done on a cumulative point basis.

There are no tests in Sociology. Grading is based on projects and
papers, which are, in turn, based on readings in the book.

The first assignment will be a project which will reflect the student's
own socialization process. The assignment will be given out in the first
week of class. This project will be worth 100 points. Historically, most
students have done well on this, and it gives them a chance to show their
creative side.

We will be following the format below ( allowing for a few adjustments
from time to time) I have not provided the exact dates that each paper will
be due, but the students will roughly have to turn in a paper every two
weeks.

PLEASE NOTE; THE ONLY STUDENTS WHO HAVE FAILED IN PREVIOUS SOCIOLOGY
CLASSES ARE THE FEW WHO DID NOT TURN IN THE ASSIGNED WORK. STUDENTS ARE
GIVEN AT LEAST A WEEK TO DO THEIR PAPERS AND SHOULD HAVE NO EXCUSE FOR
TURINING THEIR WORK IN LATE

Week 1 Project on your personal Socoialization Process ( approximate
due date: September 10th)

After the projects are presented, questions will be given out on
the following subjects and students will have at least a week to prepare
their answers. ALL WORK MUST BE TYPED.

                 Culture ( 50 points)

                 Groups ( 50 points)

                 Social Class ( 50 points)

                 Social Stratifcation( 50 points)

Inequlaity of Gender and Age ( 50 points)

Social Change and Movements ( 50 points)

                 Social Deviance ( 50 points)

IN ADDITION, WE WILL BE WATCHING SOME FILMS AND DOCUMENTARIES THAT
REFLECT EACH SUBJECT AREA. THE STUDENTS WILL BE ASSIGNED TO WRITE
A "REACTION PAPER" SHOWING HOW THE MOVIE ETC. REFLECTED EACH PARTICULAR
SOCIOLOGICAL THEME. THESE PAPERS WILL BE WORTH 30 POINTS.
