STUDY HABITS!!!

As we approach the end of the first quarter I would like to share a few observations about work habits in Geometry. Like a foreign language, geometry cannot be learned without a lot of memory work and I'm noticing a great lack of that in many students! I occasionally do oral quizzes and the results have been discouraging this year. They have a summary sheet of information for each chapter and should have every definition, postulate, corollary and theorem memorized. That is the minimum requirement to be successful in geometry. They then must apply the ideas and, for Honors, abstract the concepts to use in new ways. Students should be memorizing each days new information before beginning homework problems. Anything you can do to encourage and assist your student in this endeavor would be very useful. We will reach a point where they cannot realistically make up all the memory work.

Everyone struggles with math at some point. Even Einstein did. That is the nature of learning mathematics. So remember when you're struggling with your homework or with a new concept that it's all right! Just keep going until you've conquered it. It's a great feeling of accomplishment.
