Green Club Minutes 11-13-08

Meeting began at 3pm

Agenda:

We discussed:

· the Green convention at the Washington Convention Center that Mrs.Wonder and Carly attended last Sunday. Several recycling vendors, including the Sierra Club, indicated that they may be able to provide some advice (at no charge) to help with the PVI recycle efforts.

· Emily drafted an email to the vendors that Mrs. Wonder will send out .

· The members voted on a reusable water bottle and Mrs.. Wonder will submit the design plan and (hopefully) have a proof for next meeting. This bottle met the criteria we wanted (32 ounces, wide mouth, and green color w/o BPA) and is reasonably priced and has a funky style that everyone liked.

· Mrs. Wonder consulted with the Librarians and Mrs. McGlone in the front office and every Thursday, during the Green Club meeting, someone in Green Club will go and pick up the newspapers from the Library and the front office and put them into the recycle containers outside of school. The school receives 5 papers everyday so over the period of a month, we will have reduced the landfill by 60 papers.

· This week marked the first efforts of the Green Club in educating the PVI community- the following message went out in Thursdays Thoughts :

The Green Club of Paul VI Catholic High School is pleased to say that Nov. 15, 2008 is the eleventh anniversary of “America Recycles” Day. Did you know that the EPA’s new 2007 Municipal Solid Waste Characterization report shows Americans recycled and composted 85 million tons of the 254 million tons of total municipal solid waste produced last year? The EPA report notes that each person produced 4.6 pounds of trash per day, of which 1.5 pounds were recycled or composted. Please keep in mind that Americans save energy, conserve natural resources, and help reduce climate change every time they reduce, reuse, or recycle. According to the EPA, recycling in 2007 saved the energy equivalent of more than 10.7 billion gallons of gasoline and prevented the greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 35 million passenger vehicles. Recycling provides economic benefits by reducing costs to businesses and creating jobs. The EPA notes that the American recycling and reuse industry is a $200 billion dollar enterprise involving more than 50,000 recycling and reuse establishments, employing more than 1 million people, and generating an annual payroll of approximately $37 billion.

· Members were encouraged to research grants or contests for Green activities. Mrs. Wonder found that Coke offers a grant to get recycle bins. We want to promote the Green activities for the school to encourage more students to become involved with recycling. Perhaps we could find some green activities and do a field trip with the club.

· Holly said she will take over making the announcement for the Club. The club members want to promote the cell phone recycling and Holly said that after the Food Drive is over, she will write up announcements for the cell phone recycling etc.

· Club members are going to look around school to scout out good sites for plastic bottle recycle bins. Mrs. Wonder advised the members that we are going to buy bins with lids to avoid the problems with the current bins – that is, they look just like trash cans. If members want to, they can paint the new bins.

· Club members noted that most of the members present today were seniors. All members are encouraged to get underclassmen involved in the Green Club so that it will stay active next year.

· Club members want to do some fund raising by working in the snack bar after school. Mrs. Wonder talked with the person who schedules the snack bar help and she said that clubs are earning several hundred dollars a week from the work. The issue is that a parent must be in the Snack Bar at 2pm to put on the water to boil and order pizza. PLEASE ASK YOUR PARENTS IF THEY CAN VOLUNTEER TO ARRIVE AT SCHOOL AT 2PM- Mrs. Wonder said she’s happy to take over being the adult at 3:15. If we can find 5 parents for Monday through Friday to supervise , we can raise some money for the bins.

Sign up for the intro to recycling in lunchroom next week. Per Student Life, we need to have at least 4 to 5 volunteers at each lunch to support the introduction to the bottle and paper recycling.

Reusable sports bottle: Chris is developing a logo for the bottle (Nalgene 32 oz, green wide-mouthed with a PVI logo and recycle logo.)
Members placed the recycle container w/poster for used cell phones, ipods, camera and ink cartridges in the main hall alcove. The following announcement was developed to “advertise” the Green Club effort to recycle the items:
- Green Club is sponsoring the recycling of old electronics including:
  - Cell phones
  - I pods
  - Cameras
  - Ink cartridges

.They do not have to be working – please drop off in the Main Hallway Alcove recycle box.

· Plans were discussed for the Tie Dying Green Club shirt scheduled for 10-16-08. Members were encouraged to put their name on their shirts to be tie dyed and drop the shirts off in Room 212 before next Thursday.

· Posters advertising the recycle efforts will be made during the 10-16-08 meeting.

The members also selected 10-16-08 as the day to “tie dye” their club shirts. Members will bring in white t-shirts and chip in a dollar or two to cover the cost of the dye. Mandy R volunteered to buy the dye at Michael’s.

Looking at the various Naglene bottles from catalogues from Mrs. Perri---we decided to “Letter” the choices from “A” to “?” and have people pick top three styles (and colors) consensus seemed to be that we should start slow and order the minimum-question came up on how to finance the purchase.
Planning to put up the bulletin board in the next week or so
Planning to do posters during 10-2-08 for the tie dye tentatively planned for 10-16-09 meeting.
One of club members sketched out a Green Club logo and is going to polish it up and bring it back to next meeting.
Make announcement that members who will not be at next meeting should stop by Room 212 to vote on the choice of bottle. We want to make sure that members who have conflicts with meeting times will still be able to be involved.

Attendees signed in and the officers introduced themselves and talked about plans for the upcoming year.
