Welcome to INTRO TO PUBLIC SPEAKING!

ALL WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS MUST BE TYPED, DOUBLE-SPACED, WITH 12 PT. FONT AND NORMAL ONE-INCH MARGINS.
 
Assigned Aug. 27, due Aug. 28- "Bring in an object" speech, one-minute in length.  No written assignment.
Assigned Sept. 2, due Sept. 4- "Demo Speech,"  45 sec-1 minute.  No written
assignment.
Assigned Sept. 2, due Sept. 5- Read pp. 3-9 in Speechcraft.  Write one-page summary.
Assigned Sept. 5, due Sept. 9- Introductory Speech, p. 14 Speechcraft, 1.5-2 minutes in length.  Also due: the written speech, length not specified.
Rubric for this speech will be based on:

Written speech will also be graded.
 
Assigned Sept. 9, due Sept. 15- Essay I Speech, modeled after Essay in In Our Own Words pp.30-31. Length of speech not specified, you will read your written essay.
Also due: the written Essay, two pages in length.
 
Assigned Sept. 17, due Sept. 22
"I Think..." Speech- One page in length.  You are not to read speech,rather you should deliver from 3x5 cards.
Your one-page written speech will also be graded.

Family Tree Speech
You will need a Family Tree Poster, but not a written speech.
Your speech should be 1.5-2 minutes in length and should be presented without any notecards.

Scripture Memorization Speech
You will memorize the Scripture passage you have chosen and present as a speech.
Oct. 7: First Due Date
Type your passage from the Bible.  Show in class for a homework grade.
Nov. 11: Final Speech Due Date
You will present your speech in class.
You will be graded on the following:
How well you know speech/fluency
Interpretation
Eye contact
Stance/hands
Vocal projection/clarity

Persuasive Speech
 You will choose or be assigned a topic.  You will present a 1.5-2.5 minute speech in which you present a persuasive argument concerning your topic.  You may research your topic or use your own ideas.  (If you use other people’s ideas you must cite your sources and give them credit for the ideas). 
 You will turn in both a written speech and 3 X 5 cards. You will present from your 3 x 5 cards, but you should not read your speech word for word from the cards. The cards should contain only key phrases to trigger your thought process.  The written speech will help you to formulate your ideas and be clear on what you intend to present.  You should know your speech fluently.  You will be graded on:
 Effort/preparedness
 Eye contact
 Stance/hands
 Vocal projection/pacing/clarity
 Fluency of speech
 Written speech
 Effective use of 3 X 5 cards
 
Assigned Oct. 14, due Oct. 16 One-page summary of Chapter Four in Speechcraft- pp. 57-67
 
Interview Speech
Assigned Oct.17
Due date: Oct. 22
You will interview someone and present a written essay of the interview as well as a prepared speech.  Write about an important theme or themes in that person’s life.  Choose someone who is willing to talk freely about his/her life, and has interesting stories to tell.  You should have a prepared list of at least five-seven  questions.  You may not interview a family member.
Some questions to guide your thinking are:
Has the person been successful in fulfilling his or her goals?
Has the person’s life been shaped by outside forces beyond his/her control, such as political or economic forces?
How have relationships affected the life of the person?
Try to use some descriptive language, about the setting or the appearance and/or actions of the person.  Try to use some direct and indirect quotes.
Length of Essay: 2 pages, length of oral speech not specified, but you should cover all the material on your written essay.
You  may choose to read your speech or to present with 3X5 cards.
 
Written test on Chapters 1-4 from Speechcraft. Assigned Oct.27, given on Oct. 30.

Children's Book Speech
You will read a children’s book to the class; you will be seated on a chair to read.  Your book should be aimed at a preschool child.  You should practice reading it so that you know the material and can look at the class; interpretation is important.  Rhyming books make nice selections.  Your reading should be 1-1.5 minutes in length.  You will be graded on the following:
Interpretation
Vocal clarity and projection
Eyes/inclusion of entire class
How well-prepared
Length

Summary Chapter Five (pp. 75-85) in Speechcraft.  One page.
 
Debate Speech
You and a partner will present a controversial topic.  One of you will be “pro,” the other will be “con.”  It is not necessary that you actually agree with the side you are taking, you must simply argue for that side.
The formatting for presentation will be as follows:
Pro side: 1.5-2 minutes to present
Con side: 1.5-2 minutes to present
Pro and con sides: 2-3 minutes to discuss with each other
Pro and con sides: 3-5 minutes to field questions from classmates
We will work on some in class and library, but you will also need to work on outside of class.
Your presentation statement should be presented in a written paper that is one-two pages long.  You should use and cite two sources.
 
Assigned Dec. 1, due Dec. 3
One-page summary of Chapter Six from Speech Craft.
After Dinner Speech Assigned Dec. 2, Due Dec. 9
You will make a speech that is appropriate for an After Dinner Speech.  You should create a setting.  It could be a professional meeting of doctors, school teachers or architects (choose a field that interests you).  It could be a rehearsal dinner for a wedding party and you are toasting the groom.  It could be a book club, fitness club or football team that is meeting to have a dinner. It could be a dinner for a high school reunion.  Use your imagination and create a setting that you have an interest in.  See page 111 of Speech Craft to get more ideas.  You may use humor in your speech.
You will hand in your written speech which should be one and a half to two pages long.  You may read your speech or present from 3x5 cards.  If you choose to read it, you should make sure that you know it very well and that you are reading with interest and engaging the entire audience.  Your spoken speech will not be timed since the length of your paper is designated.
