Intro to Public Speaking

Welcome to Public Speaking Fall 2009-10!

Final Project
See due dates below assignment.

You will prepare a speech on the following topic.

What major contribution do you plan to make to the world in your life time?
Perhaps it will be in the medical field, or the world of literature, theater,
music or politics. Perhaps it will be as a humanitarian, or in a ministry.
Perhaps it lies in the domestic field as a mom or dad. Perhaps you hope to
do research in a particular field, or be a local or national leader. Be
specific. For example, if you are interested in the medical field, tell of a
particular illness you are interested in, a certain specialty, or a group of
people you are interested in helping. Tell us why you are choosing this as
your projected contribution. Do you have a particular skill that makes you
think you would be successful, or is it simply a strong desire or
conviction? You can describe the steps you will be taking to prepare for
this contribution and how likely you think your chances are of achieving your
goal(s).

Speech Length: The window for your speech is 1.5 minutes to 2.5 minutes. IT
MUST BE WITHIN THIS WINDOW OR YOU WILL BE DOCKED. You should practice this,
so that you know the exact length.

Written Speech Length: The written speech should be 1.5-2 pages long. You
should know your speech very well and plan to deliver from 3x5 cards. The
material on the 3x 5 cards should be derived from the written speech. Do not
deviate from your written speech. Do not read your speech from the 3x5
cards. You should have an introductory paragraph and a closing paragraph as
well as the main body.

Due dates:
Jan 6, 2010, Wed. We will give the speeches in class for practice. Your
paper must be handed in at this time as well. We will video this practice
speech and view in class. You will receive a normal formal presentation grade
on this. You will receive your paper back so that you can make changes as
needed.

Jan 13, 2010, Wed. - We will present the final speeches for your final exam
grade. You will hand in your final paper at this time as well.

Assigned Dec. 2, due Dec. 7
After Dinner Speech

You will make a speech that is appropriate for an After Dinner Speech. You
should create a setting. It could be a professional meeting of doctors,
school teachers or architects (choose a field that interests you). It could
be a rehearsal dinner for a wedding party and you are toasting the groom. It
could be a book club, fitness club or football team that is meeting to have a
dinner. It could be a dinner for a high school reunion. Use your imagination
and create a setting that you have an interest in. See page 111 of Speech
Craft to get more ideas. You may use humor in your speech.

You will hand in your written speech which should be one and a half to two
pages long. You may read your speech or present from 3x5 cards. If you
choose to read it, you should make sure that you know it very well and that
you are reading with interest and engaging the entire audience. Your spoken
speech will not be timed since the length of your paper is designated.
