KINDERGARTEN NEWSLETTER:   May 25, 2012

BOTANY
We introduced our first Backyard Science, BOTANY, the study of plants.  Our 
Botanists worked on tree identification.  We labeled the parts of a tree and 
did leaf and bark rubbings for our RDS birch, maple and oak trees.  We also 
celebrated both Earth Day and Arbor Day.

ORNITHOLOGY
Our second Backyard Science is ORNITHOLOGY, the study of birds.  We prepared 
nesting boxes and filled bird feeders to help take care of the birds of 
Reston Day School.  Now we are taking turns being Ornithologists by going out 
bird watching with our binoculars, special visors and bird identification 
books.

ENTOMOLOGY
Our third Backyard Science is ENTOMOLOGY, the study of insects.  We learned 
what makes a bug an insect and then we ate like insects.  Using our proboscis 
to sip nectar was our favorite!  We are now taking turns being Entomologists 
by going out looking for insects and bugs.  We learned how to collect, 
identify and then return our insects or bugs back to nature.

KINDERGARTEN SPRING PERFORMANCE
Thursday, June 7th, is our Kindergarten Spring Performance, from 1:00 to 
2:45.  Please mark your calendars.  Each Kindergartner needs at least one 
family representative present to cheer him/her on as we sing and dance our 
way through our school year.

KINDERGARTEN CONFERENCES
Thursday May 31st and Friday June 1st
