I was born and raised in Northern California and attended Catholic schools
for 12 years. I graduated from Holy Rosary School (Dominican Sisters)in
Antioch, CA and Carondelet High School (Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet)
in Concord, CA. I spent a 6-week summer at the Universidad de Guadalajara
while in college, and a few years later, I studied one semester at La
Universidad Ibero Americana in Mexico City. As a college student, I also
attended Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) at the
University of California, Berkeley, and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant
in the U.S. Air Force in June 1982. My husband Erman and I were married on
December 18, 1982.
After attending the Air Force Air Intelligence Training Center in Denver,
CO, my first duty station was the Foreign Technology Division (now NAIC) at
Wright-Patterson AFB in Datyon, Ohio.
While in the Air Force, I served as an Imagery Intelligence Officer for 10
years. My duty stations took me around the globe as I was stationed at
Lowry Air Force Base, Denver, Co; Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton,
Ohio; Comayagua Air Base, Honduras, Osan Air Base, Republic of Korea, and
with the Defense Intelligence Agency at the Pentagon. Our son Matthew was
born in Ohio, and I decided to resign my commission after the birth of our
daughter, Natalie, who was born at Ft. Belvoir, VA.
After leaving the Air Force, I worked at home and took care of our two
children who are now 22 and 18. I was home for a number of years
before returning to work in the classroom as a substitute teacher. During
this time, my husband, Erman, was stationed with NATO in Glons, Belgium for
three years. We returned to the Washington, DC area in 2000, when my
husband was assigned to the Joint Strike Fighter Program office in Crystal
City. My husband retired from the Air Force in 2005 after serving 22 years
and he still works on the JSF program in Crystal City. I guess we will be
here a while!
Prior to coming to St. Patrick School, I taught Spanish to grades 1-8 at St.
Ann School for five years in Arlington. This is my fifth year at St.
Patrick School and I truly enjoy the faculty, staff and the students in our
community. One of the things I love most about St. Patrick
School is the small size. This is a family community, where people care
about and for one another. I feel blessed to be here.
One thing I love most about Virginia is the change of seasons. Growing up
in California, I only knew two seasons -- hot and dry Summers and wet and
cool Winters. Separating them were dry and cool Spring and Fall! I have
come to appreciate the change from Summer to Fall, with the changing of the
leaves. Winter is my favorite season, as I really love a morning with
freshly fallen snow and the crisp, cold air on your face! Of course, I also
love a snow day!
First and foremost, my job is to help build a Christ-centered classroom
where all students are able to learn. By following the teachings of Jesus,
we strive to love one another, to follow the golden rule, and to treat one
another with dignity and respect. In so doing, we create an environment for
learning, working to our potential, and knowing that we are loved as
children of God.
My mission here is to teach the students Spanish, but also to allow them to
realize the value in learning and knowing a second language. Learning a
second language takes time and effort and there are some skills needed in
order to do this. My job is to teach these skills and to help each student
reach his or her potential. With the ultimate goal of helping students be
more comfortable speaking the language, I will use a variety of methods to
help them along the way. Whether they pursue Spanish or another language
in high school, I want each student to know that they can learn.
