English 9 and 10 Syllabus

Classroom Expectations

Be on time. You must be in your seat and ready to work when the bell sounds
Be Prepared. Bring your textbook, binder, paper, and ink pen everyday unless
instructed otherwise.
Be Respectful.. This includes the teacher, fellow students, and school property.
Do not line up at the door awaiting dismissal. Remember, I dismiss you not
the bell.

Start of Class
1. Turn in homework to appropriate tray/stack.
2. Copy down all homework assignments.
3. Complete warm-up activity as indicated on the white board.
4. When finished, wait quietly in your seat until the teacher gives you
further instructions.

Instruction Time versus Working Time
Instructional time- announcements, new material and/or teacher led discussion.
1. Students will sit quietly, take notes from board and/or presentation as
provided by teacher.
2. If you enter class late, excused or unexcused, enter quietly. *Do not slam
the door, leave the door open, announce your arrival to friends and neighbors
or walk in front of a teacher (or a student) who is speaking.
3. If you have a note, place it on your desk. Sit quietly and glance around
to see
what your classmates are doing. Never just assume since you came in late
(excused or unexcused) you are not responsible for the activities you have
missed or are in progress when you enter. You are responsible!
4. If your tardy is excused and you are unable to complete work in that
class period this means that you will have to stay after school to make up
the work.
5. If your tardy is unexcused and you are unable to complete work in
that class period you will receive a zero for the activities you missed.

Working time (i.e., --in groups, on projects, individually, etc.)
1. Begin when the teacher tells you to. Don’t get caught up on gossip or chat
with your neighbors about what happened last night.
2. Ask questions. If you are in a group, first ask your fellow group members
if they know the answer(s) to whatever question(s) you have. If they cannot
provide an answer,
raise your hand and the teacher will call on you. Do not crowd around
the teacher.
3. If you have a problem with one section of an assignment move onto the
next section and so on. Never stop and just sit there awaiting the teacher’s
arrival or attention.
4. When you complete an assignment look it over once more to ensure
you have attempted each section, followed instructions
and written your name on the assignment.
5. Then, depending on the teacher’s instructions, place work in appropriate
stack or keep for review.
6. Use your time wisely. Do not beg for more time. It is a waste of your
time and the teacher’s.
Computer Use
1. Computers are not to be used without specific permission.
2. Playing music or games unrelated to class assignments is
considered insubordination. Necessary steps will be taken administratively
and you will receive a “0” for that assignment.
3. **Abuse of equipment will result in the loss of your privilege to
use school technology equipment.

Bathroom/Hall/Personal Business Passes
A Tabb High School agenda is necessary for hallway passes.
Students should take restroom / water breaks between classes.
Passes are granted only after all work is completed.
*Take care of personal business during lunch or between classes.

Homework/Project/Paper Policy
Homework:
Homework is due at the beginning of class
. It should be completed in its entirety. However, credit will be given on
a percentage basis. For example, if you correctly complete half of the
assigned homework you will receive a 50/100. A 50% is a lot better than a 0 !

Research Projects/Papers:
All projects/papers are due on the specified dates given at the time
they are assigned.
