for my trip 8/20/07!
Well,
I'm off!! I'm starting on another trip across the country... only this time I
decided to go WEST to EAST! It's so exciting to travel across the U.S.A. and
meet kids from each state. I never quite know who I will meet or what
interesting things I will learn. That's why I keep this online journal... so I
won't forget any of it!
You may be wondering why I first
decided to travel through the mail. Well, I read a story called, "Owney,
the Traveling Dog" by Lynn Hall. It was all about an adventurous puppy named
Owney. He was a real dog who lived in the 1800's in Albany, New York.
He didn't have a home of his own, so the nice postal workers let him stay in
the post office and they took care of him. Owney just loved to sleep on the
mailbags!
One day, Owney followed the mailbags as they were
put on a railway mail train (Yes, the mail was delivered by train!). Owney
began to ride with the bags on trains across the state—- and then across the
country (and even around the world!). He just loved to travel! The workers at
the post offices around the country "adopted" Owney as their unofficial mascot
and remembered his travels by placing medals and tags on his collar of all the
places he visited.
Well, after reading this story I got an idea! I
decided that I could do just like Owney and travel with the postal workers...
but instead of traveling from post office to post office, I would travel from
classroom to classroom meeting kids from each state! So that's
how I got started last year (If you want to read about my travels from
2006-2007, just click
here). I'm sure you can tell how excited I am to try my trip again this
year!!
|
Here I am just before I got into my box! My
binder has all the things I need for my trip (with your special help!).
|
The first thing you'll see are these
instruction pages which remind you of everything you'll need to do to help
me have the safest trip!
|
Then you'll see this purple folder of books
about Owney. Of course, there are lots more to choose from... but I only had
room for two.
|
This one is from the Smithsonian
National Postal Museum.
|
|
This is Dirk Wales book, "A Lucky Dog."
|
Before you send me on my way, please
have everyone I meet sign my Friends Journal. I wonder how many names I will
collect!
|
|
There is also a map to color your state. Click
here if you'd like to print your own map!
|
I also made sure to bring mailing
labels for my box. The left label is for your return address and the right
label is for the next destination.
|
|
If you decide to, you can add a souvenir to my
bandana or collar (but it's not necessary!). Mrs. Stamp gave me a Virginia
keychain and a Washington D. C. keychain to remind me of home (since my city,
Manassas, VA, is close to our nation's capital).
|
|
Since I first read about Owney, I have read more
and more books about this adventurous dog... I just can't learn enough! You
can learn
more about him too, in books and online. You can also learn more about the Postal
Service and the United
States.
Well, I'm off for my trip! Please check back
to see how my 2007-2008 adventure is going!! Don't forget to mail a postcard
to each of the other 49 classrooms so they can learn more about your state
too. Here are the postcard
labels (as of 9/30/07).
WOOF!

Mrs.
Dixon's 3rd grade class
Dry Creek
Elementary School
Rio Linda, CA 95673
Hi Friends,
Wow, what an exciting start to my trip!
I arrived here in California
one day early, and began with an adventure right away. Ms. Dixon’s Third
Grade Class at Dry Creek Elementary was actually at a different school site
since their school is being remodeled, and I was delivered to the wrong
place! Luckily, Ms. Dixon knew that I was on my way and was able to call
their awesome custodian, who so kindly drove me right over to their
classroom!
The kids were all busy working on math,
and were so excited to see me! They made Ms. Dixon take me right out of the
box, and taught me a little bit about addition and subtraction, since they
were reviewing all of that right then. They had only been in school for 4
days, so everyone was still learning their new routines and procedures. I got
to learn about how important it is to work together with others, and they let
me help with their class graph about favorite ice cream flavors too.
After we had worked for awhile, it was
time for a break, so we all went outside for recess. When I got out there, I
had another surprise waiting for me…some of the kids from Ms. Dixon’s class
last year were outside, and were thrilled to finally meet me. (Since I didn’t
make it to all of the classes across the country last year, these kids heard
about me all year, but never got to meet me themselves. Needless to say, we
were all very excited!) The kids taught me how to jump rope, play basketball,
hopscotch, and even play tic-tac-toe. I couldn’t believe how much fun
everyone had at recess! Once we were done playing, we got to go eat lunch,
and boy was I hungry! The third graders are great at sharing, and I had
plenty to eat that day! I ate some chicken nuggets, a little fruit, and drank
a little delicious chocolate milk…yum yum!
When we got back to class, I learned
about the third grade class library, and was amazed at all of the books in Ms.
Dixon’s room! It would take me forever to read all of them! (She told me
that she loves books…and I really believe her!) After I spent some time
reading, the kids showed me the puzzle that they had just recently finished
working on. It was so cool! All of the kids had made a little puzzle piece
that looked like them, and then they stuck them all together like a puzzle! I
think I want to make one for myself next time I come to visit!
Well, after a long day of visiting, the
kids decided that I had to meet some other people at their school, so I got to
see the school secretary, Miss Candy, the principal, Mr. Garcia, and I got to
say hi again to the great custodian too! I even got to take pictures with all
of them! How fun! Since we were all pretty tired from all the work we did
that day, everyone had to get ready to go home. The third graders showed me
how good they are at putting their book boxes away, stacking their chairs,
getting their homework folders out, and cleaning up their classroom. I was
really proud of how well they all did. I bet they’ve been working really hard
in their first week of school! Even though I was very sad, it was time to say
goodbye, and everyone gave me one last hug! I watched them walk to the bus,
and couldn’t believe how much fun I had had in just one day.
What a
great way to start my wonderful journey! Now it looks like I’m off to Hawaii…I
wonder if I will get a lei there! It sure would be cool to add to my
Disneyland lanyard, and Sacramento,
California
keychain that Ms. Dixon’s class gave me. I just know that I will have tons of
fun in Hawaii,
and a blast on the rest of my trip. But…I sure will miss everyone here in California!
Love always,
Ollie

Aloha,
That’s what they say on the islands.
It means love, hello, and goodbye. Wow! I arrived at Kahuku
Elementary School
on Monday, August 27th at 11:55 am while Mrs. Glaser’s students were in music
class; so Mrs. Glaser gave me the campus tour.
Our first stop was the office. I met
Mrs. Masaniai, principal; Mr. Izumi, Vice Principal; Aunty Kathy, Aunty
Stacey, and Aunty Nani. Then I met Aunty Carol, the health aide. Since, Mrs.
Glaser’s students wouldn’t be back for a little bit, I visited Mrs. Camit’s
2nd graders. They were working on map skills and learning about the different
continents. I told them that I began my journey from North
America!
Mrs. Glaser’s class returned from
music class they were so happy to see me. Alana presented me with a lei and
everyone hugged me tight while I told them where I traveled from. It was such
a long flight. Mason wondered if I had anything to eat. Everyone takes such
good care of me, just like Owney.
We read stories about Owney and then
everyone wrote a story about me! What a lucky dog I am!! Now I’m off to Alaska.
The students think I might need a jacket in Alaska
after being in tropical Hawai`i
but I assured them that my coat is thick enough and if not, Mrs. Romine’s
students will take care of me.
Aloha,
Ollie

I was so excited to receive my 1st lei from my

I enjoyed meeting so many smiling faces at

Aloha!
Hawaii is an island state. We are located on one of the seven major islands.
Kahuku is a little town on the famous north shore of O`ahu. It was once a
sugar plantation town. The old sugar mill closed in 1971 and is currently a
shopping center. Kahuku High School draws its students from 26 miles of
coastline. We are fortunate to watch pro surfers surf the giant waves of
Banzai Pipeline, watch the magnificent sunsets at Sunset Beach, or just watch
the monk seals and the sea turtles basking on our beaches.

Eagle River
Elementary School

I
arrived in Alaska on Friday - that was a long trip over the Pacific Ocean, and
I sure was glad to get out of my box. All of the kids were excited to see me
in my Hawaiian lei, and they quickly added a spiffy "Sled Dog in Training"
scarf (maybe I can run in a future Iditarod!)
I
got a tour of the school, read a book in the library, and checked out the
collection of skis in the hallway (they'll be using those soon.....snow
usually starts in October). I got plenty of hugs and snuggles while the kids
were reading, and I got to hang out with some of the stuffed Alaskan animal
friends in their classroom - a polar bear, beaver, caribou, and many, many
moose. I even saw a REAL moose on my way to the post office - right by the
side of the road!
We
went outside to the playground and enjoyed the wonderful view of the Chugach
Mountains, and the children told me that in a few months there will be lots of
eagles in the trees near the playground; I guess that's why their town is
called Eagle River. They are about 15 minutes north of Anchorage, which is
Alaska's largest city, and about 5 hours south of Mt. McKinley, the highest
mountain peak in North America. On a clear day they can sometimes see it!
I
have really enjoyed my time here in Alaska, but I think I'll head out before
the snow catches up with me. I have lots of classes still to
visit....Washington, here I come!
Ollie
|
I finally made it to Alaska... this is one of the
places I missed last year. HOORAY!
|
Check out this amazing ski collection (right in
the hallway)!

Thank you Eagle River friends for
teaching me about Alaska!

Dear Friends, Greetings from
Alaska, the Last Frontier! We enjoyed our visit with Ollie and we hope he'll
return one day to try out our official state sport, dog sled racing! We live
in Eagle River, which is a small town just north of Anchorage, the biggest
city in Alaska. And, in case you're wondering, no, we don't live in igloos--we
have regular houses! We do have snow on the ground from October until April or
May though, so sledding, ice skating, and hockey are all popular here.
Favorite summer activities are salmon fishing, camping, and berry picking. It
stays light until midnight in the summer, but in the winter we only have about
6 hours of daylight each day. We have many animals here, and since we're so
close to wilderness, we see many of them in our yards or even walking down the
street, like moose and bears! We also have eagles, caribou, whales, and polar
bears in Alaska. Come visit one day--it's an exciting place!

I arrived in Washington
on a Friday afternoon. The weather was sunny and warm, but not quite as warm
as Hawaii’s.
Still it was a beautiful afternoon!
I arrived during lunch, so I went down to the
cafeteria and met Miss Jenny, the Lunch Lady, and some of the students I would
be spending the afternoon with. Then I headed back to the classroom to have a
chat with Mrs. Tully-Doyle. On the way I met the principal, Mr. Toland and
had our picture taken.
When the students returned from lunch, I had a lot
of hugs and kisses. Mrs. T-D had a desk for me and I liked that. I helped
with Calendar and was a star during the math activities. I tried my best
because I know that’s the key to being successful in school.
I didn’t get to visit very long, but I had a great
time in Everett.
Did I mention the school mascot is a Husky?

Hi All,
I arrived 2 days early in Beaverton,
Oregon.
Mrs. Davis went to the office while we were with the counselor and there I
was! When Mrs. Davis opened my box, I jumped right out. The kindergartners
didn’t know a lot about me, but had just received a postcard from Hawaii,
so they were very excited to learn about the states I visit. The children
were very friendly and bought me an Oregon State Beavers key chain to hang
around my collar.
I visited the Library, Computer
Room, and the Office. I had my picture taken with the Music Teacher, Sister
Denise Klaus. The children and I were sad when I had to jump into my box and
head for Nevada.
The students can’t wait to hear more about my travels.

life. We are located in Beaverton, near the large city of Portland. We are
about 2 hours from the Pacific Ocean and only 1 1/2 hours from Mt. Hood. We
love to ski, snowboard, hike, and bike. Many of us camp in the beautiful
forests nearby.

Claude G.
Perkins Elementary School
North Las Vegas, NV

I had so much fun visiting Mrs.
Isham’s class in Las
Vegas, Nevada!
It was pretty hot outside! Mrs. Isham said that summers here are very hot,
over 100 degrees! I learned lots of neat things. During calendar time, I got
to help the calendar specialist. We practiced math facts and skip-counting.
Mrs. Isham has her students sing the addition facts to country music. That was
really fun! I sat with some of the students and read some great books.
Recess was so much
fun. I watched as they played on the playground. The girls took me for a walk
to show me what the rest of the playground looked like. At this school they
have recess first and then lunch. For lunch today we had a choice between
hamburgers and grilled cheese. I tasted a little bit of both. Yummy! The apple
slices were the best!
In the afternoon, I
went to music with the rest of the class. The music teacher enjoyed seeing me.
She even held me on her lap. All the students wanted to hold me but I sat on
top of the piano. I really liked when they sang the school song.
I got lots of hugs
before the students went home. Mrs. Isham’s class got me a Nevada
t-shirt and put a Las
Vegas
keychain on my collar. Now it’s off to my next stop-Arizona!! I hear it is hot
there during the summer too. I am glad summer is almost over!

I listened to many terrific stories. You should

I even met Mrs. Isham's daughter, who gave me lots
of kisses and hugs too!

Vegas is an internationally known resort, shopping, entertainment, and
gambling destination. It was established in 1911. Las Vegas is the largest
U.S. city founded in the 20th century. Nevada is the driest state in the

Mrs.
Ballard's 2nd grade class
La Senita
Elementary School
Kingman, AZ 86409
I was delivered to Mrs. Ballard's class right
before the students were going to lunch. Mrs. Ballard was worried that the
kids would be so excited that they might spill lunch on me so I got to eat
with the teachers...oh! The stories they tell!
Usually after lunch Mrs. Ballard reads a chapter
from The Magic Treehouse, but the kids were so excited to learn more
about me that she read my story. They loved it! The class did some math
problems and I got to help a few students who were not sure about how to do
double digits. I learned a lot watching them.
After math, the kids got to go out to recess.
Watching them get lots of exercise was fun. Last year La Senita got new
playground equipment so it was fairly new to the kids. They showed me how to
climb the rock wall and balance on the teeter totter.
After a while on the playground, we went in for
science. The students were learning about scientific tools. I got to help
them explore the science toolbox and name the instruments. Science is Mrs.
Ballard's favorite subject.
It was a Friday when I arrived in Arizona.
Mrs. Ballard owns some property near the Grand Canyon so she took me with her
on Saturday before shipping me off to Utah!
I got to see Bedrock
City
where Fred, Barney, and all the gang live. We didn't get to stay long, so I
just got a picture of the roof sign. Next time I am planning a visit to the Grand
Canyon itself!
I
even got to see some
prickly pear cactus and the prickly pear fruit in full bloom. Desert tortoises
love this stuff as do deer and the elk that wander around the mountains near
Kingman. I didn't get to see any elk this time...next time for sure! Prickly
pear candy is yummy stuff! Hey! I bet my lei would have matched these
flowers when they were in bloom.
Well,
I'm off to Utah
now...I can't wait.

Meeting the Flintstone's gang was quite a treat!

of Arizona soon after school started. Kingman is located on the northwest
border, 100 miles from Las Vegas, NV. We enjoy the Grand Canyon National Park
being only 2 hours away. The ever popular Route 66 comes right through the
city. Kingman was built on the copper mine and the railroad. Arizona was
founded in 1880. Arizona became a state on Valentine's Day, 1912. The picture

Three Mile

Perry, UT 84302
I made it to Utah. I didn't realize Perry,
Utah, was so far north. I was just a hop away from Idaho. It seemed like a
long trip. Mrs. Morris, the secretary, told Mrs. Lee I was here and she came
to the rescue. That box was getting stuffy! We went and had pictures taken
with me and the class outside. We took pictures by the school's new soccer
goals, by the flag, and the big sign that says "Three Mile Creek". I love
taking pictures with new friends! I hope Mrs. Lee finds her card for her
camera. Someone took out her card and didn't return it. So no card, no
pictures . Hopefully it will turn up soon! Mrs. Lee was quite distraught about
it.
The class likes centers and they all do a
great job. It was fun, because in one of the centers I was able to
participate. Someone put headphones on my head and was I able to listen to a
cool story with a few of the students. Everyone wanted to hold me, so Mrs. Lee
had to set a time limit on who got to hold me next. I went to lunch with one
of the students and sat beside her on the bench. She took really good care of
me. After a yummy lunch, a few girls led me outside for recess. I had so much
fun and was hugged a lot too. I like hugs!
I found out that Thursdays are switches for
the 3rd grade at Three Mile Creek. I got to meet three other 3rd grade
teachers, Mr. Woodbury, Mrs. Zundel, and Mrs. Nielsen. We had a lot of fun. We
had music, science, and social studies. I loved music, because I love to howl
loud!
Later, we went to Mrs. Jensen for Computer
lab. I helped a few students while I was there. Next stop was the library.
Mrs. Hawkes was wonderful. She’s a great librarian. I had such a wonderful day
with my new friends from Utah. I hope I am able to visit them again next year.
Well, I better get packing! Moscow, Idaho here I come!!

Hi from Idaho!
I arrived on Monday afternoon
(October 1) after the students went home. I was really sorry that I had to
wait to see them! Boy were they surprised when they saw me waiting for them a
day earlier than what Mrs. Vietmeier had told them!
After being hugged thoroughly we
settled right down to do our morning seatwork. I helped students with their
daily math, daily language, and even gave some students ideas about what to
write in their journals! Then we went and visited the other 2nd grade classes
and everyone signed my journal.
We went outside for recess and I
sure loved playing on the slide and monkey bars! West Park is across the
street from the University of Idaho-Go Vandals! Then I was taken into the
office and met Mrs. Pierce, who I am told is the best secretary around and
Mrs. Belles. I couldn't meet Mr. Marineau the principal because he was in a
very important meeting! Well I am off to Montana. I hope I don't meet up with

The kindergarteners at North Star School in
Gildford, Montana were really excited to welcome me to their classroom. They
were so happy that of all the schools in Montana, I had come to see them! Mrs.
Lipp and the class took me to breakfast right away and introduced me to the
rest of the school. Then we went back for show and tell and I got to check out
lots of cool stuff that the kids had brought. I am a pretty good trumpet
player!
Then I got to meet Sir “Health-Nut”, who is
the mascot of the Fitness Challenge the students are doing at North Star this
year. It is a really great program that teaches the kids and teachers to eat
healthy, exercise, drink water, and get enough sleep! Their goal is to earn
85,000 points by being healthy, one week at a time! Good job, Knights!! I get
plenty of sleep while I’m traveling but I could use a little more exercise.
The day went by quickly and soon it was time
to say good bye. Since it was a Friday, Mrs. Lipp took me home so she could
put me in the mail on Saturday morning. The streets in town aren’t paved and
it had rained lots the day before. In these farming towns, rain is really
important for the wheat crop but to me it just made good looking mud puddles.
I wanted to get down and play but Mrs. Lipp said no. She did let me climb up
on some of the big farm equipment they use to plant and harvest the wheat. It
is sure fun to pretend I am a farm dog!

Whew! I arrived in Casper, Wyoming on
Wednesday, October 10th, just in time to see the kindergarteners before they
left for the day. We went outside for a picture with the class and I loved
seeing Casper Mountain and the beautiful colors of the aspen trees. There are
34 children in this kindergarten class with two teachers, so I met many new
friends.
I had a great time on Thursday doing math
centers and reading. Sometimes the children get into an old bathtub to read
and a couple of them invited me to join them. I really enjoyed center
time--building with blocks, using the computers, finding letters in the sand
table and reading in the loft. I had the best time in dramatic play, because
they let me sit at the table for a pretend dinner. There were lots of animal
friends for me to meet too—bears, Dr. Seuss characters, and many others. The
children sang lots of songs and when they sang the goodbye song, they sang it
just for me. There's a picture of them all waving goodbye!
It was a quick trip and now I am off to
Colorado! I can't wait to see if I can see the mountains there, too.
Goodbye, Wyoming!

Postcard
received 12/18/07:
Hello from Wyoming! When Ollie
came to visit us, he came to the least populated state in our country. We have
about 500,000 people spread out over 97,000 square miles--about 5 people per
square mile. We are home to the nation's first National Park--Yellowstone, and
the nation's first National Monument--Devil's Tower. We love Wyoming's
wildlife which includes bison, elk, moose, wolves, bighorn sheep, and mountain
goats. We have some of the country's best trout fishing, too! We
hope you enjoy Ollie's visit! Park School Kindergarten Class, Casper, WY

When I first arrived in CO, there seemed to
be a purple craze everywhere I looked. Everyone was talking about the Rockies
baseball team and they even gave me a cap to wear.
When I arrived at Green Gables
Elementary, the Kindergarten kids were busy on the carpet doing printing
practice with their student teacher. They were so excited to meet me and
stopped to read my story… and then went quickly back to work. I was so
impressed at how hard they were working.
My day went very fast as I watched
them do all their learning. They were working in Science on a senses activity
and they kids were feeling in socks to name different objects. That was so
silly to watch.
Boy they sure loved my visit. The
time went fast, but it was great to get a view of the CO mountains.
