Mrs. Diminnie's Kindergarten class
City Park School
Athens, TN 37303

Greetings from City Park School in Athens, TN!  I arrived on Friday, January 11th.  Mrs. Diminnie's kindergarten class had been eagerly awaiting me since January 2nd!  After I got out of my box, I helped the class find certain states on their wall map.  I helped them read their word wall and blend some words during their phonics lesson, including the words "stamp" and "mailbox"!  I got to eat lunch with the kindergarten teachers (we had steak and gravy!). I also got to meet the class's dog, Zero the Hero, during calendar time.  Zero showed me where the "0" was in the number "90" on the place-value chart. The boys and girls built me a doghouse during free-choice time. That was cool! One of the best parts of the day was P.E. time!  The gym teacher, Mr. Lane, let me participate in a lot of activities. I got to golf, play Frisbee, climb the rockwall, and sit on top of the basketball hoop! What a fun time!

In the afternoon, the students got to look at my website and see pictures from my visits to other states. I helped them work some United States map puzzles.  I was even interviewed by the local newspaper!  Mrs. Diminnie took a photo of me with each student so that they would be able to remember me.  When it was time for me to get back in my box to travel, the children were sad, but they knew Kentucky was waiting for me.  They are looking forward to the postcards and photos from my other visits!  For my going-away gifts, I got a UT-Vols keychain and a City Park Stars tag on my collar.  I also got a UT-Vols pompom for my box.  Since my box was a little worse for wear, Mrs. Diminnie bought me a brand-new box and bubblewrap to make my ride a little smoother. I got to travel in style by overnight service. Go, U.S. Mail!  Thanks, Tennessee!

Ollie

I hope all the classes I visit send their postcards QUICK... Mrs. Diminnie's class wants to collect even more.

Reading words is so much fun!

My kindergarten friends could even sound out HUGE words!!

Zero the Hero and I had tons of stories to share about our adventures!

I felt so comfy in my special house.

Well friends, I finished my visit in Kentucky. It sure was a busy day! I arrived at Lost River Elementary on an exciting day... the 100th DAY OF SCHOOL!

My new first grade friends were so excited when Mr. Goff (the principal) released me from my box! It was so fun to participate in the 100th day of school activities. We sorted all kinds of things... pennies, gum, noodles, and paper clips. Then we grouped them in groups of 2's, 5's, and 10's. We also read a wonderful story about the 100th day of school, and chewed a piece of gum 100 times! It sure made me hungry!

So I followed the kids to the cafeteria, and ate some lunch. I sure was tired when the day was over, and I was very thankful to return to my box for some rest and relaxation. My new friends promised that they would create postcards to tell you more about the state of Kentucky, and I continued on my journey.

The kids couldn't wait to meet me!

Lionelle the Lion (Lost River's Mascot) is my new friend.

I had a blast sorting and counting 100 things!

Hooray for the 100th Day!

Goodbye, first graders... I'll miss you!

I loved visiting my friends in Michigan! I was glad to arrive before Mrs. Finnegan left to have her baby! I enjoyed learning about wheels in kindergarten! We read many stories and enjoyed learning centers that were all about wheels too! I loved going to lunch with them and getting to visit art with Mrs. Peck too!

Mrs. Finnegan's class taught me a little bit about Michigan, and I was excited to learn that Michigan is shaped like a mitten. I know that now I will always be able to find my friends in Michigan when I look at the map. I also loved seeing the all the snow that was there in Michigan...it was very cold though...brrr!! It was so cold that we couldn't even go out for recess...but I sure did enjoy playing games with the kids inside. I loved meeting so many new kindergarten friends and especially all the hugs!!

I was excited to have my name in the morning message!

Look... I'm famous!!

I even had a chance to meet an alphafriend, Zelda Zebra.

I love learning centers!

We listened to a story together.

My friends read with me too!

It's so much fun to work together.

Mmmmm.... I smell lunch!

Thanks for the fun, Mrs. Finnegan's class!!

One last hug with my Kindegarten friends!

Mrs. Hamilton's Kindergarten class
Pine View Elementary School
New Albany, IN 47150

I was so excited to finally make it to Southern Indiana to meet the kindergarteners in Mrs. Hamilton’s Kindergarten Class at Pine View Elementary. I learned a lot about southern Indiana. The kindergarteners I met here were SO smart, they taught me so much and I learned a lot during my short stay with them.

I arrived right after lunch.  Mrs. Hamilton and her kids were so excited to open my box together. Since it was the afternoon, I got to work in center groups around the room while Mrs. Hamilton and Ms. Rose did math groups. I quickly learned that I was in the “HOOSIER” state…that is what they call it…I did not ask questions.

We did not get to go outside as a class since the snow was still melting from a heavy snow they had just gotten before I arrived.  So, after our centers and art class, we read the books that came in my box together.  Then the kindergarteners showed me how to play a few of their favorite word wall games. I also got to practice some of their “CHEER-E-OS” with them. I really loved southern Indiana and loved learning about this area when spring gets here in a few weeks.

The biggest event that these kindergarteners are looking forward to is the running of the Kentucky Derby on the 1st Saturday in May. I was SO surprised to learn this since this horse race takes place in Kentucky, but quickly understood that Louisville, KY is only 10 minutes from this elementary school…it makes sense!

Ollie

I made it to Pine View Elementary!

I received lots of wonderful hugs as soon as I arrived.

The kindergarteners in Mrs. Hamilton's class were lots of fun!!

My friends showed me all around their classroom.

 We checked out the computers.

 Look at all those postcards!!

We built with Legos.

 I just loved the Play-doh!

Everyone was smiling and having fun together!

 Ooohhh... who's in there!?

We had a blast on the computer.

I loved this special book too!

Thanks for a fabulous day!!

UPDATE from Mrs. Stamp: Ollie has visited 34 states this school year and traveled over 22,784 miles (doubling the miles he traveled last year!)... unfortunately, he has still not reached his next destination. Since it's nearing the end of the school year, I'm afraid Ollie will not complete his journey this year. So sorry to the following states who did not get to meet Ollie this year: Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and Virginia.

I hope you have enjoyed following Ollie's adventures across the country this year (despite a few speed bumps) and will consider signing up for Ollie's Travels again next year (2008-2009) when Ollie will race his brother Oscar, to see who can visit 25 states first! Both collie puppies will be traveling at the same time (one east to west, and the other west to east). Email me if you're ready to participate in another exciting project!!
