Words to Know

(Economics)

economic specialization - focusing on one product or service

economic interdependence - two or more people or countries depending on each other for goods and services

economic choice - the choice among many alternatives

opportunity cost - what is given up when a decision is made

(Geography)

1. hemisphere - half of a sphere (half of the globe)

2. prime meridian - a line of longitute which divides the globe into the eastern or western hemispheres

3. equator - a line of latitude which divides the globe into the northern and southern hemipheres

4. continents - the seven large land masses that are found on earth

(Explorers)

  1. Christopher Columbus – an explorer who was sponsored by Spain; he landed in the Bahamas
  2. Juan Ponce De Leon – an explorer who was sponsored by Spain, he landed in Florida
  3. Jacques Cartier – an explorer who was sponsored by France, he landed in Canada
  4. Christopher Newport – an explorer who was sponsored by England, he landed in Virginia

voyage - a long trip; especially one by sea or space

journey - a trip; traveling somewhere

settlement - a place that has been recently populated (people set up houses, food, stores, etc.)

European - a person from one of the countries in Europe

explorer - a person who travels seeking new discoveries

(Mali)

griot - a storyteller and singer who tells about the past

caravan - a long line of camels traveling together

Timbuktu - an ancient city in Mali; Timbuktu was the center for trade in West Africa

mosque - a Muslim place for prayer; there were many in Timbuktu

(Greece)

contributition - the act of giving or doing something positive

civilization - people in an advanced stage of development (one with art, music, government, and a strong social framework)

column - a tall cylinder-shaped pillar used to support a structure

peninsula - a piece of land that is surrounded by water on three sides

Parthenon - one of the most famous buildings in Greece

direct democracy - the free and equal right of every person to participate in a system of government

Olympics - an athletic contest invented by the Greeks

monarchy - a system of government in which a king or queen ruled
