I was raised in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, PA where I completed High School
at Upper Saint Clair High School. I spent a year studying at the Art
Institute of Pittsburgh before I enrolled at Edinboro University in Erie,
PA. I graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Art Education from Edinboro
University.
My first elementary Art position was at Yellow Springs Elementary School in
Frederick, MD. Since then I have taught art at various locations from
Florida to California to people between the ages of 4 and 80! I spent 3
years teaching art at The Kings Art Center in Hanford, CA where I was able
to work with artists of different ages in a very broad spectrum of media.
Another part of this job that I enjoyed was my involvement in the many art
shows sponsored by the Art Center. The combination of the various classes
that I taught and the art shows that I coordinated meant that my time at the
Art Center exposed me to the Art world like never before. While in
California, I also completed over half of my courses towards a Master's
degree in Language Arts.
I moved to Virginia Beach last year and spent the second half of the school
year as an Art Specialist and Reading Specialist at Princess Ann Elemntary
School.
I am very excited to be at Trantwood Elementary and I look forward to a
challenging and enjoyable school year!
Greetings from the Trantwood Elementary Art Room! My name is Carla Gamache
and I am very pleased to be the new Art Specialist at Trantwwod Elementary
School. My approach to the art program implements the Virginia Beach Schools
core curriculum standards set for visual arts that include six areas of art
education: aesthetic awareness, development of skills, art production, the
critique process, cultural and historial aspects, and critical thinking and
problem solving.
My art curriculum is based on DBAE (Discipline Based Art Education) method
of teaching art.
I encourage you to talk to your children about what they learned in art
class. Ask them questions like: What art vocabulary word did you learn? What
new artist did you learn about? What art materials did you use in class? Did
you see any famous works of art in class?
I look forward to working with the children of Trantwood and meeting each
parent. My goal is that every child finishes this year with a new respect
and understanding for the world of art while having an enjoyable experience
in the classroom.
