Classroom Management

The students of Room 102 participate in both individual and group behavior plans. Below explains how they work:

Individual Classroom Behavior

Students' daily behavior is recorded in their daily take home folders. Monthly calendars are inserted into the folders and are filled in daily with three faces - smiley, straight or sad. Smiley faces represent great day, no problems. Straight faces represent okay day, few reminders/warnings about behavior. Sad faces represent a rough day, physical harm on other students (kicking, biting, hitting). If the behavior is severe enough, the student and I complete a Think and Choice form, which gets signed by a parent and placed into the student's file. If the negative behavior continues, especially physical behavior, the student is then taken to the office to speak with the principal.

Rewards for Daily Behavior

On Fridays, the students come to the Prize Box and select various prizes such as pencils, erasers, notebooks, notepads, etc. In order to come to the Prize Box, students must have 4-5 smiley faces for that week.

Westie Paws

All students in the school participate in the Westie Paw behavior program. Students earn paws for various positive reasons, such as being helpful or walking quietly in the hallway. Paws are tracked by Westie Trackers that are placed in baggies on a Pocket Chart in the classroom. Once the student has earned 10 paws, they get a Mega Paw, which they can decorate and their Paw is hung up in the school. They also receive a certificate for earning a Mega Paw.

Group Behavior in the Classroom

On each table, there are containers. Throughout the week, students at their tables earn marbles for various reasons such as: working well together, using nice words, maintaining focus during activities, and cleaning up well after themselves.

Rewards for Group Behavior

On Fridays, students count the total number of earned marbles from the entire week. The table that has earned the most marbles gets to come to the Prize Box.

Rewards for Whole Class

For each smiley face for Encore, 5 stars in the cafeteria and compliment from another teacher, our class earns dog bones from a Treat Bag. Once we've earned five dog bones, that Treat Bag sheet goes into a box for periodic drawings to win prizes.
