A little bit about me...

Dear Parents and Guardians,

My name is Mrs. Joyce Sotengco and I would like to take this
opportunity to welcome your child to the third grade and room 36 at White
Oaks Elementary School. It is a pleasure to have your child in my class.
Also, I want to welcome you to our extended White Oaks family. Over the
next few weeks, I look forward to getting to know your child better. In
addition, I would like to share with you a few things about myself both
personally and professionally.

I was born in Omaha, Nebraska, and graduated from the College of St.
Mary with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education and Early
Childhood Development. Last year, I received my masters’ degree specializing
in Elementary Math and Reading. I moved to Virginia Beach in 1993 and four
years later I met my husband, Erwin. He is an Executive Chef at Lesner-Inn
Catering Club. I have two, four-legged children named Tippie and Midnight.
I am an avid runner and have completed four half marathons. Also, I enjoy
playing volleyball at the beach during the summer and competing in beach
volleyball tournaments. I have been teaching for eleven years. I was at
Jacox Elementary, Norfolk, for eight years, teaching fifth and fourth
grade. Then, I transferred to Larchmont Elementary, Norfolk, for two years,
teaching fourth grade. This is my second year working for Virginia Beach
Public Schools at White Oaks Elementary.

I am dedicated to making this a productive and terrific year for all
my students and will communicate with you often about our classroom plans,
your child’s progress, school events, and other activities as they arise.
Weekly progress reports and graded papers will be sent home every Tuesday.
Please review the work with your child and return the signed folder along
with the graded papers by Friday. I find this weekly communication to be
very helpful.

Homework is a very important aspect of school. To help ensure that
each child will be successful in school, homework must be completed the
night it is assigned. Homework is assigned to reinforce class work and to
develop independent thinking and research skills. Please check over your
child’s homework folder and planners each night and let me know about any
problems your child has completing assignments.

I strongly believe that your child will be more successful in school
if you are interested and helpful at home and work closely with me. Parents
are the most important people in a child’s life. Please feel free to
contact me anytime you have a question or concern. By working together, I
know that this will be a successful year for all of us.

       Very truly yours,
        Mrs. J. Sotengco
