| Weekly homework packets are sent home every Monday. They should be returned
every Friday. Students will have a calendar which lists each night's
homework. This will include any math home links and your child's nightly
word study. Please cut apart the word study sorts and store for use each
night during the week( see below for daily sorting assignments).Written work
should be completed in the homework notebook; this is also where the sorts
should be glued at the end of the week. All first graders should also read
at least 10 minutes nightly. Please record your daily reading in the log
that is in the orange Daily Folder. Reading 10 minutes nightly will
allow each child to meet the monthly reading goal. The word study homework
activities remain the same until the next grading period begins. Keep up the
great work at home!
Please sit with your child and complete the following homework assignment
each night. Use the word study words/pictures found in your child’s homework
notebook. The sorting that you do with the cards is just as valuable as the
written work that is assigned. You can keep your homework notebook at home
until Friday. Homework notebooks will be collected on Friday mornings. We
will follow the same homework routine for the entire fourth grading period.
Along with completing these assignments, your child should be reading
nightly to complete his/her reading log.
WORD STUDY HOMEWORK: 4th Grading Period
Do nightly and include parent signature on homework sheet where noted. Turn
in Friday.
Weekly Homework Routine:
Monday:
1. Sort your words with an adult like we sorted them in school this morning.
Explain how you sorted them. Write your sort in your notebook.
2. Place your words in your Ziploc bag for safe keeping this week.
Tuesday, Wednesday:(you must pick at least one written activity)
Choose one activity from the list below for each night. If it is a written
assignment, please record your work in your notebook.
Write your words/pictures. Using one color, draw a circle around each
vowel in the words (including y when it makes the sound of an “e” or “i”).
Using a different color, draw a line under each consonant.
Speed read your words three times. Record your times in your
notebook.
Do a “no peeking sort” with an adult. Now switch roles-the child
reads the words and the parent has to tell the child where each word goes!
Write 5 questions with your words/pictures as your answers. Here is
an example for cat: What is the name of an animal that purrs? Cat.
Choose three words from each column. Draw a picture of the word or redraw
the pictures you have, label the picture, and underline the spelling pattern
you are sorting by.
Thursday:
1. Sort your cards for an adult and explain how you sorted.
2. “No Peeking Written Sort” (like a practice test): The child writes a
header card at the top of each column. Then the adult calls out a word. The
child must write the word (without looking at the card) under the correct
header card. Repeat until all cards have been used. The adult checks the
sort and helps to correct any words spelled incorrectly or placed in the
incorrect column.
3. Glue sorts into homework notebook
