Homework:
-Do Mean/Mode Gizmo assessment questions , explorelearning.com
use class code: 697UDVESFS; either use your old login/password info
or email me to set up a new one
-Begin work on a summary of a current event article on any aspect of Biology,
use this RUBRIC as a guideline (due to me by end of class on Fri, 11/20)

Together do the dehydration synthesis gizmo on explorelearning.com
Fill out the notes on Biochem group characteristics and uses
Check out some of the articles possible. Exemplar summary & reflection.
HW:
-Read in your book pages 11-13 and 86-88 on biochemistry topics & take notes on that info
-Your summary of a current event article on any aspect of Biology, RUBRIC HERE
Friday 11/20 (I'll be gone):
You will have class time for brainpop.com video "Body Chemistry," & biochemistry links
What you don't finish you can use as study tools at home.
Finish your article summary and email to me by end of class if you haven't done it before.
If you have time yet, then you can do the CSI Toxicology activity at:
http://forensics.rice.edu/index.html Click Case 1-Rookie, then Toxicology/Forensic Biology
Start on the graphing activity as homework (see description & data below) - due Tuesday, 11/24.
You can also start on the homework for next Tuesday, on Enzymes.
Homework:
1. Finish any of the biochemistry or characteristics of life links that you have not done.
2. If you didn't finish your news article summary, send it as homework (but it will be late)
3. Graphing HW (using method of your choice, graph the following data appropriately, using
all conventions such as units, title, etc - use an appropriate scale and size for the graph)
A census of deer on an island indicated a population of 2000 animals in 1960. In 1961, 10 wolves (natural predators of deer) were brought to the island in an attempt to control deer numbers. Over the next 9 years, the numbers of deer & wolves were monitored. The results of these population surveys are presented below. When graphing, use 1 scale on the left for numbers of deer & another scale on the right for the number of wolves. Use different symbols or colors to distinguish the lines & include a key. It will be hard to show error bars or best fit lines in this exercise but you might try. Use a hand drawn graph, Excel, Word, AutoRad or Advanced Grapher. (total of 6 points)
FIELD DATA NOTEBOOK; Results of a population survey on an island
Time (yr) Wolf Numbers Deer Numbers
1961 10 2000
1962 12 2300
1963 16 2500
1964 22 2360
1965 28 2244
1966 24 2094
1967 21 1968
1968 18 1916
1969 19 1952
Study the line graphs you created. Provide a plausible explanation for the patterns you see in the data, stating the evidence available to support your reasoning (3 points).
Tuesday, 11/24:
** Collect the graphing activity.
Complete analysis of line graphs (practice/elaboration)
Intro * demo into food tests and the gizmo on Identification of Food Nutrients. Demo of actual tests
- perform gizmo on Nutrient Identification by opening student worksheet-just practice with making tests). Do enough of the gizmo so you can answer assessment questions below gizmo when completed. That is the only thing I will check.
Go over the difference between qualitative and quantitative data; diff tween observations & conclusions; what should go into your conclusion and evaluation.
Basic info on taking measurements - practice questions at the end.
Begin formation of your data table for this lab. Warning against plagiarism.
HW:
1. Make sure your data table is ready to go for Thursday.
These things below should be done by Monday:
2. Do the practice questions at the end of the Measurement Handout.
3. Read pages 14-18 in your book and read over the Basics of Enzymes PPT
Answer the questions 1, 2, 3 and 4 on page 18 of your book.
Thursday, 11/26:
Do the FOOD TEST LAB
HW:
Write up lab - include data table, conclusions table, conclusion writeup and evaluation. Use the lab writeup guideline & rubric as outlines of what to include. You DO NOT NEED TO WRITE UP the procedure, or intro - I have done that for you.
Monday, 11/30:
Collision Theory Gizmo write up answers together in class in pairs.
"in the section on OBSERVING..." do #2b & 2d; in "HALF-LIFE" #1b & 1c
in "FACTORS..." #2a, 3a, 3c, & 3e (but #1 impt to think about,producing hypotheses)
Then do the Assessment Questions #1,2,5 for that gizmo
HW:
Complete the Collision Theory assignment as a study guide on enzymes
For studying, look over these links on enzyme action as time permits:
.....A good enzyme animation site - you can do different things & observe the outcomes - reading
is good info as well. http://bcs.whfreeman.com/thelifewire/content/chp06/0602001.html
.....Link to enzyme action simulation: http://www.lpscience.fatcow.com/jwanamaker
.....Cartoon mini-lectures http://www.biologyinmotion.com/minilec/wrench.html and http://www.biologyinmotion.com/minilec/lock.html
Wednesday, 12/2:
Go over the collision theory questions; Do the Virtual Enzyme Lab together
Website for the lab is: http://bioweb.wku.edu/courses/Biol120/Web/enzyme1.asp
Demo on how to use the pressure sensors and what catalase does
Prep for Lab discussion on variables and controls; work in 3 groups - one with catalase concentration (Joanna, Jovanna, Sophia) (Mohd, Alfonso), one with pH buffers (Nick, Alvaro, Valentin), (Raquel, Ricardo, Ignacio)
HW:
Complete the Virtual Enzyme Lab, if we haven't finished in it class.
Read lab directions. Make a draft your lab writeup, using the outline, lab on Fri, 12/4 & Tues 12/8
Start preparing for a test on everything to be on Thursday, Dec 10th, by studying & putting notes
in order; and identifying what you don't understand.
Friday, 12/4:
Perform Catalase and gas pressure lab - collect data
HW:
Work on lab writeup so you have a rough draft. Use this RUBRIC so you know what to include.
Tuesday, 12/8:
