Story Starters
Responding to Art - choose one of the paintings below and write either a narrative, persuasive, or expository essay. Use the questions to formulate your response.
Art: Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci Does Mona Lisa have a secret? Was she an international spy?
Art: Snap The Whip by Winslow Homer Why are those boys playing snap the whip? Are they trying to win a competition?
Art: A House by a Road by Edward Hopper Is it true that that house by the side of road is haunted?
Digital Picture worth 10,000 words...? - No, just a fun way to be inspired. Check out the photo contest Nevada had and is considering opening this contest globally. If you feel inspired by one of the photos you can post your story on their blog. Be sure to revise and edit before posting your reply.
 Fun with Idioms : Select an idiom to read. Write the idiom down.  Then draw a picture showing how someone might literally interpret this phrase. Now select a writing mode e.g. persuasive, narrative, expository, poetry and incorporate the idiom. Conclude with the idioms actual meaning. 
 Wacky Tales - Fill in the blanks to create a crazy story. Print your story and on the back reflect by answering these questions: What part of speech livened up the tale (the eight parts of speech)? How? How does this help you improve your own writing?
Writing with the Right Brain - categories to get your creative juices flowing while using the right side of your brain.
Writing with the Left Brain - switch sides...what did you notice? Are you a left brain or a right brain writer?

 The OWL - Everything you need e.g. dictionary, citation tips, how to research, writing a scientific paper, editing, creative writing, .... Just select your topic from the right side task bar, choose your target, and begin.
6-Traits Writing Lab - Designed to help you develop your writing trait. Select the trait you need the most help with and complete the lab.
BBC Skills Lab - Select which skill you need to improve e.g. grammar, spelling, writing and then select a topic to focus on. When you have completed the lab take the quiz, print the certificate and turn in.
The Writing Center - External links to help you understand different writing tasks. Easy to navigate. Also includes an online tutor for additional help.
