Weekly Update

February 8th-11th
Dear Families of Room 2,

Hello everyone!  We do not have school on Friday, February 12th and Monday, February 15th.  Also, the book orders are due on Thursday, February 11th.  Thank you!

Mathematics
We are continuing our work with perimeter.  This week, we will begin measuring the area of shapes and objects.  The class has been engaged in measuring the perimeter of objects in our classroom.  This activity also required students to use their adding skills in a real-world situation.
Language Arts

Every child always works hard to meet the personal reading goals he or she has set.  We are seeing a lot of progress!  I will send home your child’s most recent STAR reading test results in the Thursday Folder this week.

We are continuing to focus on summarizing this week.  Students will determine the most important parts of a text and share them in sequence.  This can be done verbally and in writing.

Please, have your child read nightly at home and have him or her complete the reading log. Reading really is the most important homework a child can do.  Make it fun by letting them choose magazines, comics, and favorite books.  Just make sure the reading is a “good fit.”

Continue to have your child retell his/her nightly reading with you at home.  This is a great comprehension strategy!  After reading a fiction "good fit" book, your child will be practicing retelling the story using the format of: characters, setting, the problem, three important events in sequence, and the solution.

Another great strategy is questioning.  Have your child verbalize questions as they read.  Then have them read to see if they can answer the question.  Remember, some questions may not be answered.

We are always looking for "good fit" books.  These are books that students should read most of the time when they are reading independently.  A "Good Fit" book is one where your child is interested in the topic, understands the text and knows 98-99% of the words.  Research indicates, the more successful children are with reading independently, the more they will improve in their reading ability.

Science

We are continuing to explore sound. The class experimented last week with tuning forks, water, and ping pong balls.  They were able to see the vibration of sound and were entertained by the results!

Language Class
We will continue learning Spanish this week!

Reminder:
You can send a peanut-free healthy snack for your child to eat after recess.  Also, if your child walks or gets a ride to school and they eat breakfast here, please make sure they arrive by 8:00.

Thursday Folders & Reflection

Please make sure to sign your child’s Thursday folder and Thursday Reflection on Thursday night.  This is my assurance that you have received the information.  Thursday Folders and Reflections should be returned on Friday,  Thank you!

Sincerely,
