Curriculum Overview Second Grade

Motor Skills

 

It is expected that students will:

  • throw a ball while stepping towards target
  • catch a ball using proper techniques
  • dribble a ball using the hands and feet
  • roll a ball using one hand
  • strike a ball with the hands or a paddle
  • move feet in complex patterns
  • kick and trap a ball
  • jump a self-turned rope and a rope turned by others

 

 Physical Fitness

It is expected that students will:

  • participate in activities that develop physical fitness
  • discuss the different elements of physical fitness (strength and flexibility)
  • explore how factors, such as exercise and nutrition influences fitness
  • discuss how fitness impacts health
  • begin to learn how to determine individual fitness level

 

Basic Movement Skills

 

It is expected that students will

  • leap, slide, hop, and skip
  • bend, stretch, twist, and skip
  • identify and use body parts while moving
  • move over, under, around, and through
  • balance while being still and while moving

 

 

Responsibility and Cooperation

It is expected that students will:

  • follow rules, procedures, and safety practices
  • cooperate and share with others
  • participate in activities from other cultures

Expressive Movement

It is expected that students will:

  • move in different pathways and at varying speeds
  • explore sharp and smooth, tight and loose movements
  • create and perform a movement sequence with at least three parts
  • perform simple dances
