Today was trading day so if your child came home with a few extra trinkets that is why. It was a great use of communication skills and the target was I can trade with my classmates.
We had a lock down drill in the AM class and they were very well behaved. We shut off the lights, locked all the doors and blinds and remained quiet for about 12 minutes. I reminded them it was a drill and we needed to practice being quiet in case the principal had other directions for us.
Have a HAPPY THANKSGIVING !!!!!

It's nice to have such a sunny day. I'm hoping it stays like this for a while. As the days get colder remember to send in a coat and dress for the colder weather. We go out to recess rain or shine. Please put your childs name on everything. I am amazed at the number of coats in the lost and found every year.
We have been working on Native Americans this week. We are doing patterning in math and we made a necklace for our Encampment Day. The kids could make any kind of pattern they wanted. Several choose an ABAB pattern and some made a more complicated pattern ABCDEF ABCDEF.
I tested many of the students on letter names and sounds and what to do with a book. We do all the testing to get ready for report cards. Some children were tested on comprehension as well. This week we will also be tested counting and numbers.
In writing we are making up Native American stories using pictures and words.
Trading Day is on Monday. I did not send home a bag with the instructions. Here is a picture of what a bag might look like.

I cannot believe this is the 50th day of school. We've had two assemblies since I last wrote. I hope your student talked about them at home. The Veterans Day assembly gave the students a chance to see actual people in uniform and many Veterans. It was a nice tie into the stars that the kids shared during the week.
Todays assembly was a dance, acrobatic, acting group that amazed all of us. The props they used were very unusual. The kids had fun and I hope the group inspired some kids to take up dance.
We continue to learn about Thanksgiving. Last week we compared our Thanksgiving to what the pilgrims experienced using a Venn diagram. We also continued to perfect our writing stretching out words and stapling papers together to work on making books. One student is writing all about cats and has 3 pages with expert cat info.
In Math we are working on learning numbers quickly and making patterns. Next week we will make a Native American necklace using rigatoni. Our target for this will be I can make a pattern on my necklace. We also learned a new game beat you to ten. It uses counting skills and prediction as well as addition and more and less. A fun game that teaches students the skills they need.
On November 25th we will have encampment day and trading day. I will send more info about this later. Trading Day was my 16 year olds fondest memory of kindergarten. It's a great way for kids to develop their communication skills.
We have also started testing for report cards which come out in December.
Thanks to all of the parents that came to conferences. It was nice meeting all of you.

We have been learning about fall, bats and spiders. We learned several facts and read non fiction and fiction books. One of the books is a big book called BBBBB Bats it's a song book that has some catchy lyrics. So if you hear your child singing "bbb bats nocturnal creatures that come out at night" they learned that this week. In writing, we are learning about stretching out words to hear all the sounds and writing as many sounds as we can. We are also working on adding details to our pictures and our writing. In math, we are working on writing numbers 0-9 and counting to 100 by 1's. We also did a day of geometric shapes. We sorted 2D shapes by sides(straight or curved) and corners.
The next two weeks we will learn about owls, pumpkins and safety tips for Halloween. Our pumpkin party is Tuesday the 29th. No costumes please!!!
We need a few things for the party, so please look in your child's folder for the supply list. I try to ask different people throughout the year, if you don't have a request this time you will later in the year. Thanks in advance.
Conferences have started please contact me if you haven't signed up for a conference. If you cannot make your conference time please let me know so we can reschedule.

Hope everyone had a great weekend. Last week we studied fire safety and safety in general. We practiced calling 911 and what you do in case of a fire. I emphasized the importance of knowing their address and phone number and having a meeting place outside in case of a fire. We read Gail Gibbons book called Fire Fire!! and I am Fire by Jean Marzzolo. We also read Officer Buckley and Gloria by Peggy Rathmun, which teaches basic safety tips.
We finished our first unit in math and we move on to unit 2 at the end of the week. Unit 2 begins counting and number recognition. I know many students already know this so we will be playing many games and identfying numbers quickly and learning to write them correctly using a series of poems that will come home next week.
In class on Wednesday we learned about wood and paper with a whole day of science activities. We read Old Macdonald Had a Wood Shop and A Tree is Nice. This week the morning class will do the same.
Last week we did a a lot of acting out of the Three Little Pigs and the Three Billy Goats Gruff. We read several versions of the stories and did many activities related to them. The kids love retelling the tales and listening while their classmates had a turn.
This week we will do the last of our fairy tales Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We will end the unit with a teddy bear picnic outside, if the weather permits.
Conferences start next week. I will send home a reminder and a calendar to let you know when your conference is. Here is the link. Conferences2013.docx
The Teddy Bear Picnic still went on inside. We got to eat with Mrs. Bell's class and play a teddy bear game.
Hope everyone had a great weekend. I spent it taking my oldest to college. It was a wonderful experience and I know she'll do well, that's just the person she is. I'm so proud of her. Please send in 1 stuffed animal on Friday, that will fit in their backpack.
Picture Day tomorrow. We take pictures soon after the kids arrive. Tell your child to turn in their picture envelope.
The next two weeks we will be reading, retelling, and acting out the stories of the The Three Billy Goats Gruff , the Three Little Pigs and Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We will end the unit with a Teddy Bear picnic. ( Eating our Snack out on the lawn and playing a Teddy Bear Game).
Because of all the allergies in the class I will no longer be giving out a teacher snack. So if a child forgets a snack they will just need to go without that day. Please make sure I know and the office knows if your child has an allergy.
We started our own writing folders and our 1st piece of writing. We talked about adding details and how writers are never finished with a piece the first day.
In Math we have been sorting by 2 attributes. We sorted buttons, students, keys, and various other objects. The work sheets you see are but a small portion of what we are doing.
Conferences start next month. They will be on Wednesdays after school. Wednesday October 30th has a lot of openings. Please let me know if that works for you Mrs. Keller
Please remember we are a nut free classroom.
Your child can bring nuts for lunch because the cafeteria tables are cleaned between classes and they don't sit on the floor. Thanks for understanding.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++We have been learning about color mixing, color words and sorting in math. We all were tested this week on so many things. Vision, letters, numbers and much more.

I had a very full summer. Lots of traveling . I went to Costa Rica and saw monkeys in the wild and sloths hanging out in trees as well as a tarantula which my daughter carried to safety. Then I went to New York for a few weeks and saw my parents and my sister and niece. I hiked to the top of a beautiful waterfall and saw lots of old friends some of them I have known since kindergarten. I look forward to meeting you and having a great year in kindergarten.
