           - Author Perspective Notes: Know each groups' "truths".
           - Literary Devices. You should understand all of them on the 
                  "lit device" handout. Focus on personification / 
                   parallelism / alliteration / allusion / imagery
           - Writer Match-up: Match the name and writing to the writer's
                  image. You have study handout for this. 

           Test is about 43 points.

    Due Monday 3/18 and Tuesday 3/19: Two items are due upon return from  
        conferences.

     - First: Legend of Sleepy Hollow annotated reading. I am looking to see
       how you annotate so the directions are minimal. As you read, make
       notations in the margins to show important portions of the writing. On
       the left-hand side, mark ideas and themes in the reading. On the right-
       hand side mark any lit. devices you find and important vocabulary     
       words. Show that you are aware of the author's ariting methods. 

     - Second item: Creative writing! Design a quality piece of descriptive 
       writing based upon a place in nature that interests you. It can a
       forest, field, ocean, street, planet - anything that is involved in
       nature. Your writing will be double-spaced typed. It can describe
       something beautiful, dangerous, haunting or sad. Make sure to use 
       imagery and atleast three other lit devices. Length should be QUALITY:
       (1 to 3 paragraphs - 3/4 page to a full page.) 
 
          -First draft should be edited by qualified person of your choice.
              Have them sign that page.  
          - Second draft: Highlight all lit devices you used and label each 
            one clearly with a pen or pencil.
          - Provide a final, perfect page on top.

      necessary for the autobiography to be printed out if you wish to save
      on printer ink.

     - Then summarize each paragraph down to one, two , or three sentences.
       By doing this, you will be able to see Henry's central argument.
     - Once you have completed that objective, go below the info you just 
       wrote and decide if Henry is using logos, pathos, or ethos for his 
       persuasive speech. Add lines to prove your choice.

    Due Tuesday 2/12 and Wednesday 2/13: Continue working on the Patrick 
       Henry speech. Highlight the following ideas and mark them in the
       appropriate margins: (Use the textbook for support p.208)
         - Who is "Mr. President"?
         - What is the "question" mentioned in line 5?
         - Locate and note "parallel writing".
         - Locate and note any "imagery". 
         - Locate Henry's "Call to Action" (this is where the speaker tells
           his listeners what he wants them to do.)
         - Define any unknown vocabulary words.

            following completed:

    Due Wednesday 10/24 and Thursday 10/25: Unit #1 Assessment. The assessment
      will be covering all concepts that we've covered so far this year.
      Primary focus will be on three early American writers: Cabeza de Vaca,
      William Bradford, and Olaudah Equiano.
 
      Students: We've had a great first unit. I'm confident that if you've 
         been participating in class and review the concepts on the study
         guide, you will do well on the assessment.

        taking the test the week AFTER make-up week will receive no higher 
        than 60% on the test.

    haven't already. Notes will be checked at the beginning of class.

    Equiano (Text page 102). Take notes as you read. There will be a quiz at
    the beginning of class on the reading so you can build points. All 
    students received a text book their last period of class. Since Mrs. G.
    was able to get text books to period #1 - the text might not be
    acceccable on this website.   

    *Unit Assessment #1 will be scheduled for Monday and Tuesday of the 
      following week.

     narrative about his early life as a slave. Underline or highlight any
     important line in the writing. There will be a reading quiz on the

         - Final product can be simple, but must show that it was not
              scribbled down just before class began. If you're not feeling
              creative, you are welcome to type it up neatly and print it.
