Check!
The Math MSP is on the "done" list. Please don't think this means we are done learning - oh my gosh - we still have a lot of curriculum to work our way through. We are currently focusing on Probability and will also be covereing expressions/equations (we've touched on them but need to do more), as well as pre-algebra. The skill of problem solving is always a big focus this time of year as we apply math skills to
solving "real world" problems.
Additionally we will be assisting with the
Ancient Market Day
by doing the pricing paperwork in math class. Great integration!
Our
end-of-the-year test
is a second form of the MSP practice test kids took over a month ago. By the time they take this test for the second time they will have had 8 additional weeks of instruction and practice. We will be doing the test during class on June 11, 12, 13 during regular class time. Kids can use their MSP Practice Test (they all have them) to study.
DEADLINES:
Late Work turn-in to count for 100% day (a small reward activity for kids who have 100% of work done in 100% of your classes) is
Tuesday, May 28th.
The reward will be June 3rd in the afternoon during regular school hours.
Final late work turn-in for the end of the trimester is Wednesday, June 12th. I will not be able to accept any work after that date.
May , 2013
The weeks continue to fly by! We are working towards preparing for our Math MSP (state test) which will by on May 9th. This is an untimed test and students are encouraged to work as long as needed. We will provide testing rooms for the entire school day if desired. :) Kids can best prepare by reviewing their MSP Practice test booklet, reviewing their Math Journal notes and the end-of-the-chapter reviews in their book.
We have two upcoming field trips: Portland Art Museum (late May) and OMSI, June 17th. Information/permission sheets will be sent home about both of these trips soon. We will be needing adult chaperones for each trip, too. OMSI fee is $18, Portland Art Museum will be about $3.00.
You may have heard a "rumor" that I'm retiring at the end of the year...it is true. I absolutely love what I
do every day so it is a good time to move into another phase of my life. My husband and I will be volunteering six months next year as Camp Hosts or Visitor Center Interpreters/Guides at three different
parks:
Golden Bluffs Park, in the Northern California Redwoods
Lake Parrygin, in north central Washington
Wright Brothers National Memorial in the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
I do promise to give my full effort to the kids as we round out this year :)

Can it really be April? Time has flown by these past few weeks.
This week on Thursday and Friday we will be giving a two-hour practice MSP test. It will be scored but not entered in the grade book. This test will be given again in June (a second, but very similar version) which will be our final test grade of the year.
This tests gives the kids an opportunity to practice their test taking skills and to determine where they might have "holes" in their learning. We will go over several problems a day in class, while still doing our standard lessons.
I think you must be squirting Miracle Grow on the kids because I'm sure they all are growing like weeds. Suddenly I'm looking eye-to-eye with many of the kids and up at others.
Our acamdemic awards assembly for sixth grade will be this Friday :) We will be clebrating both attendance and high GPA's.

Student led conferences are Wednesday, Feb. 27th and Thursday, Feb. 28th. This is an opportunity for your student to shine! Although they are presenting to the people who love them the most, kids are still quite nervous. Thank you for taking the time to come in and let your student share with you...the kids have worked hard in preaparation.
We would welcome treats to share - cookies, cupcakes, veggies :) Just let me know. Thanks you!

VALENTINE CELEBRATION
NEXT THURSDAY FOR ROBERTS HOMEROOM!
You may buy/make cards if you wish. Please include everyone in homeroom. There are 30 of us :)
1/2/13
Welcome back everyone, I hope all are rested and ready for a year of growth and learning in 2013.
A giant thank you to all who sent in materials for our geo-house project. The kids did an awesome job and we feel this really helped them learn their shapes, lines and angles.
Just a friendly reminder that I offer MATH HELP every Tuesday/Thursday after school until 3:30. Kids will need to have their own transportation home. This is the ideal time to re-do missing or low scoring assignments, get extra help with confusing assignments or practice with the teacher. Usually I only have a few students - two to four - and EVERYONE is welcome. On the same topic I am taking a district sponsored class that will be held on six Tuesdays
late
in Jan and Feb. During those weeks I will offer help on Monday and Thursday.
Please remind you student that I post the next MATH HELP date on both my door and assignment board :)
We will be continuing with Geometry throughout January working on skills such as surface area and volume. As always please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Happy New Year!
Jo Lynne Roberts
