                                                Nicaragua Service Learning Trip

Every other year, Lopez High School Spanish students have the opportunity to apply to participate in a service learning trip to Nicaragua.  The students live and work just outside Managua for 14 days in the headquarters of the Central for Development in Central America (CDCA - www.jhc.cdca.org), where they participate in a variety of building projects in and around the town of Nueva Vida.  In addition to setting up work projects, the directors of the CDCA offer mini classes about Nicaragua and take the students on a few day trips that include a journey to a remote coffee cooperative, as well as various cultural sites in and around Managua.

Lopez Elementary School Mission Statement and Goals

Music and children are natural companions.  When children are given the opportunity to explore, create, celebrate, and grow with music, in both formal and informal settings, they are given a lifelong gift.  The essential gift of music is that it provides children with the means for discovering important human qualities in themselves and the world community they are a part of. Music is a language common to all.

The goals of the Elementary Music Program at Lopez School are:

      1)   To provide basic and regular learning experiences with music from which each child can   pursue

his or her interests and talents as appropriate.

      2)   To enable every child to discover and benefit from the relationship of music and the arts to

             other disciplines.

      3)   To provide a rich and varied set of musical experiences which represent a broad range of

             cultures.

      4)   To provide meaningful connections between music and life.
