Last Name Project

Where Does Your Last Name Come From?

Multicultural week will be celebrated soon. We
would like to know what cultures our last names originate from. Each
person will assemble a poster to show where their last name came
from and interesting stories about their ancestors.
Your job is to interview people in your family to find out about your
heritage. Your goal is to understand what country your last name
originated in and find out some interesting information about your
ancestors and their culture.

Interview at least two people. Here are some questions to help you get
started.

1. What country does our last name come from?
2. When did our ancestors with this name come to America?
3. How did they get here?
4. Why did they come?
5. What are customs that are common in the country they came from?
6. Do you know anything interesting about my ancestors?

If you’d like to include the origins of other last names you’re related to as
well that would be extra credit.

Your Poster
-Include a map of where your last name comes from.
-2 or more additional pictures that show information you learned from
your interview.
-Captions for each picture explaining the interesting information.
-Any other pictures, maps, captions, or objects that help explain your last
name's history.

Dear Parents,

This is your child’s first at home project. Please help them as much as
you can. For many this will be the first time they’ve put a poster together.
Please help them to organize their information, add backgrounds, and
look tidy and eye-catching. They need to be responsible for collecting
the information from people and writing their captions and speaking
notes. They need to be ready to share their information in front of the
class using their poster as a prop.

I am happy to give out construction paper, poster board, glue sticks,
and markers. Students just need to come in with a list of what they
need. You may use a 3 fold poster board or just a poster size sheet of
paper.

Thank you for helping your child organize and complete this project.

Thanks,

Jenn McMurrin
