Teaching is in my blood. My very first teaching job was teaching English
to adults in a night school in Bogota, Colombia where I was a college
student in 1967. Since then I have taught first year college Spanish,
preschool, kindergarten, first grade, trained early childhood teachers
throughout the USA, in the United Kingdom, Puerto Rico, Peru and Chile. I
have been a Head Start director in southern California and Oregon. I think I
chose a teaching career because I love to learn and want school to be a
joyful experience that leads to life-long learning. I am in my ninth year
teaching kindergarten at Martha Lake and can’t imagine anything I’d rather
be doing!
My passions outside of work are music, knitting and collecting
children’s books. I returned to playing the cello after a 34 year break.
Although I don’t have much practice time available, I manage to take
occasional lessons, play weekly in the Mukilteo Community Chamber Orchestra
and in a string quartet. If you visit our classroom during lunch you might
notice the background cello music playing.
My husband, Jake, works in salmon habitat restoration, but moonlights
as my classroom support - building shelves, puppet theaters, finding
great dress-up clothes at thrift stores and visiting the classroom to help
me out.
We have two cats, a cockatiel and a rabbit. Our bird, Teddy, and rabbit
Nipper visit the classroom frequently.
The mission for our class is above all else to build a caring community
where it is safe to take risks and learn from both successes and
mistakes. Kindergarten children will develop self-confidence,
independent work habits, and a positive attitude toward school as well
as a solid foundation of early academic skills.
