Homework and Grading
I will assign homework each night, Monday through Thursday. Homework will
usually be Spelling, Math or Reading. If your student says that they have
no homework on those nights, they are probably mistaken. Exceptions would be
if there is a holiday or an evening activity at school such as Science Fair
or Open House.
Homework is due at the beginning of the day. We will usually go over
the work from the night before and grade the homework. I know that it can
sometimes be difficult to get homework done each night, especially with
sports or family activities. I send homework that is a review of topics
that we have covered in class or that we need practice to master.
Occasionally, I send “challenge homework”. I am looking for the effort and
perseverance to try their best on new material.
Students in the Fourth Grade should be spending about 40 minutes on
their homework each night. That includes 20 minutes of Reading per night. If
your student is spending too little or too much time on homework, please let
me know. Homework is an important indicator of whether a student understands
the work we are doing in class because they are working independently and
without my help. That’s why I believe homework is an important part of
school.
