Reading is the "gateway" to all other subjects, so it is fascinating and fun to teach! Although much of our Reading classes will be spent with grade-level curriculum, it is important that your child choose books at their personal reading level when reading independently. This will help promote the greatest growth possible. The curriculum we use in 5th grade is Harcourt Trophies. The link to the website is below. Each story focuses on vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, a focus skill, and themed activities.
In addition to Harcourt, some of the areas we will cover this year are:
Folk and Fairy Tales
Reading Response Journals
Text Structure and Non-Fiction Text
Grammar and Daily Oral Language
For December, your student is responsible for completing a goal sheet that includes 4 books at their reading level (1 chapter book and 3 non-fiction books) - NOTE: this is a change...as teachers we feel the Social Studies book also meets the goal of engaging students in non-fiction text, so we are eliminating 1 non-fiction book from the goal sheet. The topics for the non-fiction books are: science topic (topic of non-fiction book report), any non-fiction, and a book on food and nutrition. These will change from month-to-month depending on our curriculum. These goal sheets are due at the end of each month and AR tests must be taken and passed (70% or better) on each book. We have spent alot of time in class talking about these parameters, so please talk with your child about them. Their current reading level can be found on the front page of their planner. Your student will receive 10 points for passing an AR chapter book each month, and 10 points for one non-fiction book report (format can be found under "links") on this webpage. 10 additional points will be awarded each month for reading and passing tests on the 3 non-fiction books. Tests on the Social Studies reading material will be given in Social Studies class.
My goal is to help your child become a better reader and to enjoy reading. It is a pleasure to be teaching your children this year.
