About The Teachers

Mr. Snyder was born in February of 1951 in Indianapolis, Indiana. He spent
his younger years participating in sports and enjoying his annual trips
across town to watch the Indy 500. He received his B.S. from Ball State
University in Muncie, Indiana and a M.A. from the University of Northern
Colorado in Greeley, Colorado. Mr. Snyder moved to Olympia in 1979 and
started his teaching career. He has taught at the WA HE LUT Indian School,
the Olympia School District Options Program, the Olympia Community School,
and currently enjoys team teaching with Mr. Varano at Pioneer. He also
taught SCUBA diving and sea kayaking for The Evergreen State College Leisure
Education Program.
Mr. Snyder's daughter, Rose graduated from Capital High School and is now a
student at the University of San Diego. Mr. Snyder likes to spend time with
his partner Suzanne and their dog Wally.

Mr. Varano was born in August of 1951 in Meadville, Pennsylvania. He spent
many days playing all kinds of pick-up sports with neighbors and his older
brother. In junior high school he developed a passion for astronomy and the
space program. He graduated from Ohio State University with a bachelors in
sociology in 1973 and got his teaching credentials from California State
University, Fullerton in 1976. After substitute teaching for two years in
Orange County, California, he taught third grade at Wildomar Elementary in
Lake Elsinore, California for three yeas, where he had the great fortune to
meet the adorable Miss Wyman who was teaching fourth grade there. In 1981
they both moved to Olympia to continue their teaching careers and were
subsequently married. Mr. Varano taught in the North Thurston School
District for 11 years at the first, second, and fourth grade levels. He was
also a science specialist at the elementary level for two years. In 1993 he
moved to the Olympia School District where he taught at Pioneer, Jefferson,
Lincoln, Centennial, and McLane Schools, mostly at the fifth grade level.
Mr. and Mrs. Varano have two sons: Drew, a senior at Cal Poly, San Luis
Obisbo, California and Paul, a sophomore at WSU. Both boys went to Pioneer,
WMS and OHS.
Mr. Varano continues his love for astronomy, plays guitar and sings in The
Get Back Band, plays tennis, bikes, runs, and loves to travel. He's been to
48 of the 50 states. (Delaware and Alabama, if you're wondering)
He and his wife have two black cats--Cubby and Teddy.
