The Workshop format works in this way: students will be given a series of activities on Monday, accompanied by mini-lessons on each activity. All activities will be posted on this website so that you can monitor them. Students will be given a print out of the list of activities. Their job is to complete the list by the end of the week in any order they wish. This allows students some control over their time and it teaches them time management and responsibility as well as the skills in the activities. I encourage the children to do the activities at school so that learn to make positive use of their time, but you may see one sheet or maybe two come home for homework. Most of the the things they will be doing are review and some are reinforcement of new teaching. For example, they may have a crossword puzzle (a fun way to work on vocabulary skills), a multiplication practice review, a fraction activity, skill sheets from their math program, a reading comprehension activity and a grammar activity. They will be given approximately one hour per day to work on these activities. During this time, I hold "clinics" where I work with small groups and one-on-one with students wanting help with specific skills (generally math). Every Friday, we will have a "Workshop Quiz" where I take questions from the various activities to test them to see that they know and understand how to do the skills. They may use their Workshop papers on the quiz. This encourages organization, because they may not use other people's papers or blank papers on the quiz...only their own work.
