Week 2-11 through 2-14

I know this time of year the darkness and rain can be discouraging. It is more difficult to get up and going each morning when facing the dark, cold and often wet morning. I get asked about morning routines every year! Here is a helpful article and tips on this very difficult middle school challenge! I have also had a lot of kids complaining of not eating breakfast each morning. They say that they are getting up late and do not have time. I have been feeding them graham crackers and reminding them that they are now 6th graders and should have their own alarm clock and be able to wake, get ready for school, eat breakfast and be on time.
Reading and Writing students need to have turned in 2 Book Responses by the end of the trimester. One was due during the first half and the second due by March 8th! Many students do not have EITHER turned in yet! Please see the info on the Reading Templates page or pick up a copy of the requirements on the handout shelf in Mrs. Ireland's room.
Thanks and have a great week!

Top 10 Morning Madness Tips for Getting Kids up and Ready

FromRobin McClure, former About.com Guide

http://childcare.about.com/od/behaviors/tp/gettingkidsup.htm

Getting kids up and ready for the day...whether it be for school, daycare, or even a sport or enrichment activity is a sure-fire stress builder and typical cause of morning madness. What can parents do to start each day in a positive fashion? Here are seven ideas.

1.Getting Kids Up: Morning Routine Must Become Way of Life

Parents unwittingly cause morning madness by not instilling that the routine is a family requirement and not an option. A non-negotiable routine must be established, and consequence discussed and determined. (i.e. If you don't get up on first call, your bedtime is 15 minutes earlier tonight). It's the "wiggle room" that causes melt-downs and tantrums on the very morning parents have a "must make" meeting.

2.Stagger Wake-Up Times

If you've got more than one kid in the house, and especially if you have a large family, consider staggering wakeup times for greater efficiency. Start with kids who need assistance first, or the ones who are real sleepyheads who move at a snail's pace come mornings.

3.Getting Kids Up: Clothing Wars Can Be Conquered With Proper Planning

Clothing, down to clean socks, underwear and shoes, and even matching hair accessories should be laid out each night before bed. Youngsters can play a role in choosing the outfit, but no changes are allowed once their head hits the pillow. And, then stick with it! The only exceptions should be an unknown tear or stain, or surprise change in the weather. This avoids missing socks, unmatched shirt and shoes, and keeps getting dressed a simple step in beginning the day vs. a looming battle.

4.Getting Kids Up: Breakfast Choices Should Be Determined In Advance

One mom swears by weekly breakfast menus; other adheres to cereal and fruit. Yet another has her kids eat the $1 breakfast at school each morning. Some daycares offer breakfast for kids; others allow parents to bring in a morning meal. Breakfast is important--some experts argue that it is themostimportant meal of the day, so your kids need a nutritious start each a.m. However, that start shouldn't put parents in a work bind or make kids late for school.

5.Only Do What's Really Important

Some parents unwittingly set their kids to fail with their morning routines by tackling on unexpected chores and duties, which causes whines and a mad rush to end up on time. Consider creating a checklist of what absolutely must be done each morning, and then forget the rest. If you want your child to make his bed every morning, then make that a requirement. However, cleaning the cat box can surely wait until a child gets home.

6.Getting Kids Up: Snatch and Go Theory Really Does Work

It's just not enough to get dressed and eat. How many times have kids missed the bus because they couldn't find their homework sheet or didn't have their backpack put together? If you drive your kids, then put their organized backpacks in the car the night before. Lunches should also be prepared just before bed and easily grabbed from the fridge ready-to-go. Jackets should be in a central location. The "snatch and go" theory really does work in the mornings.

7.Getting Kids Up: Exception Mornings Should Be Planned As Well

One way to make it easier for kids to get up in the mornings is to create occasional "kids get up...NOT" day on occasion as a reward. If it's a school holiday, lazy weekend opportunity, or just about any reason at all, parents can make a special celebration out of the exception. The "not" day also serves to reinforce the lesson that normal mornings have a schedule and expectation; and that occasionally everyone gets a break from the routine.

8.Getting Kids Up: Instill Self Responsibility

Why does a parent have to wake kids up anyway? Except for youngsters, kids can learn to awaken by an alarm clock and get themselves up without mom or dad hovering and yelling, "Are you up yet?" Let them decide what is the best time for the alarm to go off and get ready on time. If this means Erica doesn't get her hair braided or Sam doesn't get second helpings on cereal, encourage them to set their alarm 15 minutes earlier tomorrow. Cause and effect...it's a good lesson to learn!

9.Getting Kids Up: Model Morning Behavior

And, finally, parents really can help to determine whether their kids become morning risers or morning whiners. If parents moan and groan, are always frantic, grumpy and running late themselves, then how can they really expect anything more of their own kids? Good advice is to get up earlier yourself, start that coffee or do 10 minutes of exercise, and then show that Positive Mental Attitude (PMA) and really mean it when you greet your kids with "Good Morning!"

10.Designate an Essentials Area

Designate an area for all essentials that can eliminate the crazed morning syndrome when you're trying to leave. Shoes, backpacks, car keys, cell phones, purses, etc., should be placed in this area every day, always, so they are always in place and ready for action. Keep a cell phone charger in this area so your phone is charged for the day. Not having to hunt down keys or other last-minute essentials is a time and blood pressure saver, for sure!

Week 2-4 through 2-8:
Welcome to February!
Please check planners and teacher websites nightly. Grade reports for the first half of the second Trimester will be complete and posted Friday.
Thanks,
Mrs. Ireland

Week 1-14 through 1-18:
1. We are almost half way through the year. The mid-point of the second trimester is January 31th. Wow time has flown and the second half always goes faster!
2. Please check with your student about supplies. This time of year pencil pouches need to be refilled notebooks and folders refreshed.
3. New flex classes have started - ask your student how it is going. All students are getting Math, Reading or Organization skills classes during this period.
4. Please remember to check planners, teacher web sites and provide homework time each night. They all have at least an hour of homework at night - even when they say they don't!  Look for colored pen to indicate first second and thirds – planning in the planner and estimating the time it takes to complete the homework. Students should be writing in the actual time in the planner.
5. After-school help on Wednesday's from 2:45-3:30PM. If homework is not completed or a student is not passing a class they should be staying with me every Wednesday. They need to have a ride home at 3:30PM.
6. No School Monday. Hope everyone can participate in one of the many celebrations of MLK Jr.’s life and work.
Thanks and have a great week!
Mrs. Ireland

Many students have not brought in the candy items they were assigned last Friday. Please check with your student and send in the materials for Thursday!!! Last day to work on the gingerbread houses!!!

All poster boards are due at the end of class Wednesday and I’ve already told the kids that I can’t make exceptions because they have the oral presentations in class Thursday and the open house Friday morning!
Thursday's oral report each partnership will present four or five facts they found during the research.  This presentation should take about five minutes and both partners should be involved.  They should share the most important or interesting information related to the country or holiday.

Please check with your student to see if he/she is in charge of food items, supplying plates, napkins, cups, warming pots, table cloth, utensils for serving and eating, extension cords, lap tops, iPods for playing music, decorations for the country or holiday, etc. All of these supplies should come to school on Thursday. Food comes to school Friday morning. It is less stressful on the kids if they can get their entire area decorated and ready to go for the Open House.

Friday Open House:  7:30-8:00 am.  Please have your student here between 7:15-7:30 if possible.
Your student’s food will come to school with them on Friday. Please feel free to take project boards, gingerbread houses and left over food and supplies home at the end of the Open House at 8am. Enjoy and thanks so much!

Week 12-10 through 12-14:

Friday, December 6, 2012: Downtown Camas Hometown Holiday Celebration with Tree Lighting at 6:30 pm in front of the Liberty Theater with our Jazz Band performing at 7:45 PM followed by our 6thGrade Choir at 8:15 PM - both on the main stage.

Any potential other sales will occur after yearbook distribution on June 13 and will be sold on first come first serve basis and quantities will be limited.
Our Annual 6thGrade Winter Project Parent Open House is scheduled on Friday, December 14, 7:30-8:00 AM. Come and see all the exhibits our students have created and sample foods from foreign lands. Parking is limited so car pools are encouraged.
Our final full school event prior to winter break will be our Pie Palooza Assembly on Friday, December 14, at 1:45 PM in our Tom Wallenborn Gym. This fun and spirited assembly will include a fun opportunity for everyone to watch the placing of a pie in the face of select staff members in connection with our “Stuff the Bus” participation. All are welcome to attend this joyous celebration!

Beginning the school year tips for success:

Students need extra structure and support at the beginning of the school year. After having this much time away from a school routine they will need reminders and helpful cues to get back into the good habits of successful students.

1. Get a good night of sleep and eat a healthy breakfast every morning. This is essential for our mind and body to work and learn. If you are not able to eat before you leave for school please take advantage of the school breakfast program or pack a breakfast and come up to my classroom to eat before class. I do not want ANY of my students going to class with an empty stomach. If there are concerns please let me know and we can work out a morning schedule together to make sure this happens!

2.
USE YOUR PLANNER EVERY DAY! Write down all of your assignments for each class and check this list off when completing your work each night. A well used planner is the key to Middle School success!

3.
Do your homework every night. This includes your independent reading and book log for Mrs. Ireland's class. Do not wait to do it all on Tuesday! Set up a routine and a specific place and time to do your work each night. Make sure your homework place is well lit, has all of your supplies and is away from all distractions like T.V., your phone and email! Use the teacher web sites to stay ahead of the game and plan for busy nights!

Sixth grade students should EXPECT to have at least an hour of homework every night! Parents please remember to have your student check planners, teacher web sites and provide homework time each night. They have homework even when they say they don't!

4. Clean outback packs and check all of your supplies at least once a week. Make sure you have a pencil pouch with: pencils, erasers, pens, red pens, colored pencils, and glue sticks. Don't forget that memory stick EACH day

5. Use an Accordion Folder. Get a sturdy plastic version with a strong closure. We will set these up in school and they will be an important tool to help you keep track of your assignments and completed work.
REMEMBER - File it! Don't pile it!!!

6. After-school Helpon Wednesday's from 2:45-3:30PM starting on September 26th. If homework is not completed daily or a student is not passing a class they will be asked to stay with me every Wednesday until they are up to date and passing. They need to have a ride home at 3:30PM.

7.Add to your favorites and bookmark this site: http://www.camas.wednet.edu/sky/index.html Please check my web site and student grades on Skyward at least weekly. You can easily access all of the needed teacher sites and skyward as well as follow the school calendar through the above site.

September 24-28:
Last week of the month! Students should really feel like they are getting the routine down and feeling comfortable with their classes, teachers, lockers, homework expectations and class work.
If your child is not yet feeling comfortable I recommend they start attending my extra help session after school on Wednesdays. We can work on class work and homework as well as discuss issues and problem solve together. At the beginning of the year parents are also welcome to attend after school on Wednesdays from 2:45-3:30pm. Students need a ride home!
Magazine Assembly on Friday at 1:50.This is one of our big fundraisers for the ASB student activities and sports. It benefits all kids so look for the envelope to come home on Friday and SELL, Sell, Sell!J
Students have now completed two book logs if they are in my Reading and Writing class. Most students are doing very well with this assignment. Check for graded papers on Thursday to see where your child is performing and my comments about the areas to improve.
I am so very impressed with the students in my classes this year. They are hard working and dedicated students who take school seriously. I am so happy and grateful to get to work with them this year. Thanks for sending me such great kids and supporting everything we do here at school at home!
If you have any questions or concerns please email or write a note in your child's planner.
Thanks,
Mrs. Ireland

September 10-14:
We have made it through our second week! Routines and procedures always seem to take up so much of our time! Once established they make the rest of the year much smoother - so it is worth taking the time now! I have really enjoyed getting to know all of the students! I am really looking forward to a great year of learning.
I wanted to take a moment to explain a few details about Skyward.! I often enter assignments into Skywardlong beforethey are due. If you see an assignment listed with a star or zero points possible that means we have not yet corrected itorI have not entered the grade into the computer. The computer shows assignments as missing as soon as it reaches the due date. If your child is really missing that assignment it will list a points possible score and their score will be a zero with a check under missing column. I will also write a reason why the assignment is missing in the comments section based on what your child tells me has happened.
I hope this clears up the many Skyward questions we always have at the beginning of the year! I know it can be confusing the first few weeks. Please always feel free to contact me with questions or concerns.
Thanks!
Mrs. Ireland

Welcome to Skyridge Middle School
I hope you have had a great summer and are excited to start your middle school career!
Tuesday 9-4-12:
6th grade schedule confusion.
The white print out schedule really should be called a class list since it is not the order of classes nor does it have class times posted. The class list is really the computer program, Skyward's format for teachers to enter grades. At the open house I gave out green schedules to students and I have extra copies for the first day of school! Today, all students who see me for any class will also write their schedule in the back of their planner.
The 6th graders have a very smooth and easy schedule to follow once you look at the classes and not the class list. Please see the Schedule page on this web site for further details.
1 SKY Day 2 Hawk Day
STAR classes per 1 class per 2 class
All students have Health/Fitness as either their Sky or Hawk day. The other day is either: Band, Choir or the Rotation classes - Performance, Art or Technology.
This period is the only thing that changes each day. The rest of the schedule is 3 academic "Core" classes - Math, Language Arts and a Science/Social Studies Block. The end of the day is a Flex/Community period where all students spend time with their teacher team and smaller community in the 6th grade.
The teaching teams are:
Garner/Smith/Mattson
Givens/Mantz//Morrisey
Parks/Kinkead/Westfall
I hope that answers all of the questions!
As always if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to email or call!
Thanks,
Mrs. Ireland
