We are the “Busy Bees” of Room #18!
Background checks are required if you want to be a volunteer in our classroom or want to accompany us on a fieldtrip. Please check with the school office for background check forms.
If your child has a birthday during the school year please feel free to send a birthday treat on or near their birthday. Treats will be eaten during our snack time – around 1:30. Summer birthdays will be recognized at the end of the school year. Please do not send birthday party invitations to be distributed at school unless all students in the class receive an invitation.
Our Book Buddies are from Mrs. Willis’ 3rd grade class. We will meet with our Book Buddies every week and they will read our library books to us.
We will participate in the “Book-It” reading program sponsored by Pizza Hut. The program runs from October 1 until March 31.
Once a month I will send home book order forms for you and your child to look over. Not all books promote Christian values, so please choose carefully. Book clubs do offer books at reduced prices and it is a great way to build your child’s home library.

Our class will have Computer Lab once a week. Mr. Troupe is our computer instructor.
Parent – Teacher – Student conferences will be held November 18-20. Class will be held in the morning and conferences will be scheduled for the afternoon.

Dad’s Day, is usually the first Friday in January. This school year , it will be held on January 8, 2010. We have our dad’s share what they do at work. The “job panel” is very low key and then we treat them with a fun snack.
Discipline is easy. We work hard to make our classroom a positive and safe place for all. Our “Busy Bee” rules are:

Each student needs to bring an individual “emergency kit” to be sent in a Ziplock bag. The kit should include:
A small flashlight with extra batteries or a light stick
1 small packet of wet wipes
A candy bar or other special treat
An encouraging note from you
A family picture (optional)

Throughout the year we will take field trips. Information regarding these trips will be sent home in their weekly note, “The Buzz”. Permission slips need to be signed and returned to school before your child will be able to participate. If you, as a parent, would like to join us on these trips we would love to have you join us. See the school office for background check information.

“Give Me Five” is the signal I will give to get the attention of the class. This means:
1. Eyes are on me.
2. Ears are listening.
3. Mouths are quiet.
4. Hands are still.
5. Feet are still.

It is my belief that homework at a Kindergarten level is developmentally inappropriate. Therefore, I will not assign any unless your child is misusing their work time or your child has several absences and needs to complete their missed work at home.

Independence is a goal for all students because it builds self-esteem and self-confidence. Kindergarteners are capable of doing many things on their own and I encourage them to do as much as they can for themselves. Please work on the following skills at home with your child;
· tying their shoes
· zipping

Journal writing will become a part of our daily routine. Encourage your child to write at home for a variety of purposes.
The June box is where I keep items that are confiscated because they are being played with during class. All items will be held until Graduation day in June.

If your child needs to leave school early, please check them out at the school office.
Our class will have Library time with
Mrs. Angelico, once a week. They will be able to check out 1 book that they will be able to read in the classroom. They are not allowed to take their books home.
We collect Campbell Soup labels and Box Tops.

Our Music time will be on Thursday afternoons. Mrs. Colvin is our music teacher.
A special Mother’s Day party is planned for the Friday before Mother’s Day in May. This year, it will be May 7th.
The Kindergarten Math program provides students with mathematical experiences that help them develop number sense and a positive attitude towards mathematics that will continue throughout their school career and lives. Many of our Math concepts are covered through our daily calendar routine.

We do not take naps in Kindergarten, but at the beginning of the year a 10 minute quiet time is observed each afternoon. We lay our heads down, close our eyes, and listen to quiet music.

Open House will take place in March. This is a great time to invite friends to check out the school and see if it is the place for their child to go to school. It is also an opportune time to check out 1st grade with your child.

P.E. is every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday with Mrs. Palmer. Please remember to have your child wear proper shoes on those days.
When picking up your child please wait outside the classroom door. I will try my best to have them out on time. If someone other than their parent or guardian is to be picking them up, please make sure that they know who that person is and that I know that someone else will be picking them up.
Picture Day will be October 12.
Pet day is Oct. 9th This is the day to share your pet with the class. Watch for more information in our class newsletter, “The Buzz”.

Kindergarten has recess every morning from 10:00 to 10:15, at lunch time from 11:50-12:15, and Tuesday & Thursday afternoons from 1:15–1:30.
Report cards will be given out 3 times during the year, - at conferences in November, in March and at Graduation in June.

Sharing is on Friday. I ask that their sharing item begins with the sound of the letter we will be studying that week. Watch for weekly information in our class newsletter, “The Buzz”.
Spirit day is the last Friday of the month. Wear BLUE!!! If they wear blue every Friday, they won’t miss it on Spirit day!
Kindergarten Science curriculum is called FOSS (Full Option Science System). We have 2 units, - Animals 2x2 begins in January. Wood & Paper begins in April.

If your child is tardy for school, please stop in at the office to pick up a tardy slip before bringing them to the classroom.
Toys may be brought to school for sharing days and for rainy day-indoor recess days. Toys are to remain in their backpacks until the appropriate time. If it is too big for their backpack, it is too big to bring.
Teddy Bear Day is in the last week of October. Have your child bring their favorite teddy bear to school.
I love to teach to themes! Each week we will concentrate on a different theme, but there are a few major themes that will take more than a week to cover. The big themes are:
· bees (beginning of the school year)
· penguins (January)
· ducks (March)
· Butterflies/ladybugs (June)

Volunteers and visitors must register in the school office before coming to the room.
Wet and or dirty clothes can be uncomfortable. Extra clothes may be kept in their backpacks in case an emergency clothes change is needed.

Zzzzz –Make sure that your child gets plenty of rest. Setting and keeping a bedtime is a wonderful gift you can give your child. Another gift you can give your child, which they will remember for a lifetime, is time taken to read to them at bedtime.
