Bennett/Woods Humanities Grading and Homework Policies
Grading:
Students are encouraged to set their own goals this year in terms of which grades they wish to
earn. We use a points-based system, so you can easily track your progress and decide when extra
effort is needed to achieve your goals. Our grading scale is:
90% and up for an “A”
80% and up for a “B”
70% and up for a “C”
60% and up for a “D”
Less than 60% will be marked “Incomplete” - meaning not enough work was completed to receive a
grade. Special arrangements can be made to complete additional work to raise the grade, by
parental
request.
Homework Expectations:
1. Everyone turns in the assignment on time. No excuses.
2. Everyone keeps all assignments due in the front of their binder, behind the “HOMEWORK” tab,
so
they can be located easily and turned in.
3. Everyone writes new assignments in their planner, every day. Parents should be able to check
this each night, and can verify this information on our class website.
4. If absent, the student or parent should call the school and request the assignments, which
can
be picked up at the end of the school day in the school office.
5. If absent, and assignments were NOT picked up, the student should get the work missed
from
peer support, write the assignments missed in the planner, and complete and turn in the
assignments
the very next day. (For extended illnesses, we can work out a longer-term plan, although it is
even
more important in this circumstance to pick up the assignments regularly from school.)
6. Missed tests will be made up the day you return, or at the first available opportunity, so be
sure
to study for them at home.
7. Unexcused late work will not be accepted.
SUPER HOMEWORK TIP: Use your class time well, since we often give you enough time in class to
complete your work. There should never be that much to get done at home, if you get right down to
work in class. Less talking, more focus!
***A note about toys and distractions in class:
If you choose to play with toys or other distractions in class, you are voluntarily offering to donate
those items to our end of the year auction for charity. That is very generous of you! However, if you
do
NOT wish to donate these items, make a wise choice and do not bring them to class, or leave them
zipped up in your backpack. Your only other choice is to start saving your money, so you can bid for
your items at the end of the year! You are responsible students who are focused on learning; that is
why you are here at Marshall. Be smart.
(Electronic devices will be taken to the office, labeled, and can be picked up after school -- these
items
will not go into our auction. Our school rules state that these items should never be seen or used
during class.)
Classroom Expectations for Humanities
In this classroom, we:
1. Arrive on time.
2. Come prepared to participate and learn.
3. Treat one another with kindness and respect.
4. Listen intently.
5. Take good care of our room’s supplies, equipment, and furnishings.
6. Leave toys and other distractions at home.
7. Turn in all assignments, no matter what.
8. Always give our best effort.
Consequences of not following rules:
1. Verbal warning.
2. Time out, in classroom or in hall; timeout sheet completed and kept
on file.
3. Office referral and home contact.
Consequences of following rules:
1. Improved learning and achievement.
2. Positive interactions and positive feedback.
3. A pleasant and fun learning environment.
