Each student this year will be challenged to:
• master the 7th Grade state standard objectives for
writing and reading.
• write clearly, correctly, and creatively, in a variety
of styles and for a variety of purposes.
• improve grammar and spelling skills.
• read every day, explain and analyze what was read,
and express thoughtful opinions about it.
• read and enjoy a wide variety of books and materials.
• demonstrate understanding of Medieval World History and Washington State
History through both individual and group reports, classroom activities, text work,
projects, tests, artwork, and dramatic productions.
• strengthen good classroom and study habits, especially organization and assignment
completion.
• speak clearly and comfortably in front of the class.
• work as a productive team member.
• strive for and achieve personal “bests.”
Humanities Activities 2009/2010
Here’s what we will do to help us reach our goals (As you can see, we are going to be BUSY
this year, but it will be fun, too!):
Reading
Read at least three novels each quarter; keep a log; complete AR tests
Reading test preparation activities/practice tests/discussions
Read alouds, book talks, and silent reading - always have a novel with you!
Spelling
Master 10 words a week: learn simple rules to help improve your spelling, as well as words
to build your vocabulary.
Pretest on Monday; homework assigned
Homework due Thursday; spelling round activity
Test on Friday
Writing
Daily Writing and Editing Activities to start the class each day - Jump right in !
Writing test preparation activities/practice tests/discussions
Word games, Tables of Knowledge competitions, and more!
Creative/Informative/Persuasive writing projects: All types of writing, from
persuasive letters, to poetry, to descriptive essays, to pro/con debates.
History
1st Semester: Medieval World History and Beyond: Daily activities using
History Alive textbook, group activities, drama, art, projects, review games, and tests.
Also, Geography Bee practice and participation during the month of December.
2nd Semester: Washington State History (the only high school requirement you take in
middle school -- you must pass it here, or you have to take it again in high school!): Daily
activities, including text work, projects, tests, artwork, a field trip, and dramatic productions.
Organization
Careful, daily use of our planners, and a 100% completion policy for homework.
We will learn how to track assignments and get them all in, on time, every time!
