1st Quarter Independent Reading Requirements
(Keep this paper in the reading section of your binder.)
1. Locate good books that tell great stories (novels or biographies), that are at your reading
level/ability, which you have NOT read before.
2. Make sure that the books you choose have an AR test.
3. Read and enjoy the books! Pay attention to detail, and be sure you understand the sequence of
events.
4. When you finish a book, do the following:
a. Record the book in your reading log. This includes the bibliography as well as a brief summary
and opinion. Don’t return the book until you have recorded this information!
b. Take the AR test for the book. Remember, you can only take it once, so be sure you are ready!
Try to take the test as soon after reading the book as possible, while the details are still fresh in your
mind.
c. Record your AR test date and score in your reading log.
5. Read AT LEAST three new books this quarter, and take the corresponding tests. Most of your
reading will be done at home, but the tests must be taken at school -- there is no home access for
the AR tests. If you read more than three books, I will take your top three scores for your grade.
Your tests must match up with the information in your reading log!
We will have the library reserved for us every WEDNESDAY from 11:00 to 11:56 (am team) and from
12:36 to 1:32 (pm team). During that time, you may read your book, take an AR test, or both. This
is time you can count on!
Any books that you read and test on between the dates of September 9th and November 4th can
count for 1st quarter.
Your grade will be based half on your test scores, and half on the quality and completeness of your
reading log: 20 points for each test, and 20 points for each log entry, for a total of 120 points.
Your first completed reading log is due Wednesday, November 4th, by the end of your library time
that day.
