Homework

Dear Families:

Thank you for taking the time to read our Homework web page. Each and every
week look for my Homework News in your child's folder. I will send this home
every Monday, or the first school day of the week. Listed on this page are
the homework requirements for the week, on a day by day schedule.

New and Exciting!
If you would prefer, you may choose the link on the Reading Homework Unit
Stories page to access each Reading Homework Unit.

Each day of the week I would like you to read with your child for 20
minutes. This time together with your child is invaluable and provides
several benefits. First and foremost, the time that you spend with your
child reading and discussing a story is a very special time for both of you.
Showing your child that you value books, and want to share them, fosters a
love for reading in your child. Secondly, helping your child to become
familiar with concepts of print, such as the title, author, illustrator and
the relationship between words and illustrations, tracking of text as it is
read, direction of print, etc., each of these are critical pieces for reading
success. An additional piece of Reading Homework is found in your child's
Reading Homework Notebook. This spiral notebook contains four pages of text
that pertains to the unit your child is working on in small group Reading
instruction. Please complete one page each night and initial at the bottom
of the page. Soon these simple lines of alphabet letters and picture words
will become words that your child is capable of reading independently with
you.

In addition, each week I will send an activity or game from our Bridges in
Mathematics curriculum. The activities are meant to be played for several
days during the week to help your child master a skill or skills.

Homework in Kindergarten does not need to be returned to school unless there
is a written response that the student must complete. Examples of these may
include coloring or circling shapes, writing numbers, or completing an
addition or subtraction counting activity.

Thank you for helping your child understand the importance of homework
practice. As a partner with you in your child's education, together we will
see great achievement this year.

Sincerely,

Ms. Parker
