Jazz Band Information

Auditions are held in early October.

Watch Jazz Band bulletin board for sign up and audition material.

After auditions are completed, the rehearsals begin Tuesday, October 25.

Rehearsals are from 7:25 a.m. – 8:05 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Students are asked to warm-up individually for 5 (7:20 a.m.) minutes and then we will begin

Rehearsing at 7:25 a.m. We generally rehearse in October – December and April – June.

Students are also highly encouraged to listen to great jazz artists and attend local performances throughout the year. Listening to outstanding jazz artists and trying to emulate their style is a huge part of the jazz tradition.

Students will be assigned a part (ie. Trumpet 2, Alto Sax 1) and will then need to purchase the book of that part. The method we will be using is a terrific introduction to jazz styles and playing.

The book is titled:

Jazz Ensemble Method by Dean Sorenson and Bruce Pearson.

The book is available from the local music stores (Music 6000 (786.6000), Music and Arts Lacey (456-4200) and Music and Arts Olympia (705.3598) or you can order online Please call before going to the music store to be certain of the availability of the specific book assigned.

The Jazz Band usually performs throughout the year for the lunches sometimes before the Almost Winter Band Concert (December) and special events. We also have one or two evening concerts in the spring (Jazz Night at OHS) along with our Spring Band Concert to finish out the year. The focus is not only the learning pieces (or “charts”) but also the basic styles of jazz and improvisation.
