Weekly Update

December 14th-18th
Dear Families of Room 2,

We a will be making a tree scene instead of gingerbread houses this year.  We thought this would be a fun change and a tasty treat!  Any donations for this project are appreciated.  Examples of items are small candies, green frosting, white frosting, and little gingerbread men.  A note went home in Thursday Folders with details.  By the way, I apologize for some Thursday Folders going home on Friday.  We made some changes to our class schedule on Thursdays for the next month due to the lessons our counselor is teaching, and I haven't adjusted!

KOMO 4 News came to the school on Wednesday afternoon for the Kids Who Care project.  If you copy and paste the following link into your web browser, you will see a video that shows our third graders doing a wonderful and important community service project in an effort to help children with cancer.

Thank you for all the donations and help with our "Pay it Forward" community service project, Kids Who Care.  It was a great success.  We made 110 kits for young cancer patients staying at The Ronald McDonald House in Seattle.  They will be delivered this week!

This week on Monday the 14th is Holiday Reading Night.  The event will be held from 6:30-7:30 here at Emerson.  It should be a lot of fun!

Mathematics
We will finish our second math unit called Surveys and Line Plots.  The class will take the unit assessment this week.

Language Arts
The class is doing a great job with making choices about what they do during Daily 5.  Students have been working on “Read to Self”, “Read to Someone”, “Work on Writing”, “Listening to Reading”, and “Word Work”.  They are getting more comfortable with telling me what they plan to focus on as they do each choice.
This week, we will continue thinking about authors' purposes for writing different types of text.
Have your child retell his/her nightly reading with you at home.  This is a great comprehension strategy!  After reading a fiction "good fit" book, your child will be practicing retelling the story using the format of: characters, setting, the problem, three important events in sequence, and the solution.
Another great strategy is questioning.  Have your child verbalize questions as they read.  Then have them read to see if they can answer the question.  Remember, some questions may not be answered.

We are always looking for "good fit" books.  These are books that students should read most of the time when they are reading independently.  A "Good Fit" book is one where your child is interested in the topic, understands the text and knows 98-99% of the words.  Research indicates, the more successful children are with reading independently, the more they will improve in their reading ability.

Science
We will finish our solar system model that is now hanging above our heads in the classroom!  The class really likes the new "view" we have of space!

Language Class
We will begin learning Spanish this week!

Reminder:
You can send a peanut-free healthy snack for your child to eat after recess.  Also, if your child walks or gets a ride to school and they eat breakfast here, please make sure they arrive by 8:00.

Thursday Folders & Reflection

Please make sure to sign your child’s Thursday folder and Thursday Reflection on Thursday night.  This is my assurance that you have received the information.  Thursday Folders and Reflections should be returned on Friday,  Thank you!

Sincerely,
