SWEET CLARA AND THE FREEDOM QUILT

INTERNET PROJECT 2001

We read several stories about quilts and examined the many wonderful quilts that parents sent in for our classroom display. Each child chose their favorite quilt, and then worked on various poetry writing activities about quilts. THE HIGHLIGHT OF THIS UNIT came when we read the book SWEET CLARA AND THE FREEDOM QUILT. This selection showed how young Clara was able to stitch a pattern on a Quilt that quided slaves through THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD. We decided to create our own QUILTED UNDERGROUND RAILROAD which is pictured at the top of this page.

We also practiced MATH ARRAYS using the undecorated quilt squares. Can you guess the MULTIPLICATION NUMBER SENTENCES pictured above and below this question ?

We enjoyed reading several of the books by Faith Ringgold and other authors. This picture shows part of our classroom quilt book display.
