October 13, 2008 - October 24, 2008
Literature
We are deep into the novel, The Cay. During this unit, we will be studying characterization and how a character changes, different types of conflict, and how theme is developed in a novel. In addition we will review reading strategies, work on vocabulary development, and group discussion techniques. After every few chapters, I give a comprehension quiz. At the end of the novel, the students will be assessed on characterization, plot development, types of conflict, and theme.
Independent Reading
The students visited the library to choose a mystery book to read during the month of October. The students are required to read a minimum of four books a quarter. I also talked to them about reading a minimum of 200 pages a month. We have also talked about how they need to read a minimum of 20 minutes a day at home. (In addition to the time we read at school.) Reading for pleasure – What a great way to increase reading comprehension and vocabulary!!
Language Arts
We are currently writing book reviews and review the writing process. In addition the students continue to learn and practice memoir writing strategies. Both the memoir writing piece and the book review will be finished within by the 24th of October. The students will also review oral speaking skills and explain their book reviews to the class.
We will finish reviewing types of sentences, subject compliments, direct objects, and fragments/run-ons.
