8th Grade News

8th Grade Monday Letter

September 13th, 2009

The PTL Open House is tomorrow at 6:30 pm. We usually begin in the church and then we are able to move to the classrooms. PTL also has refreshments. I will have brochures and pictures out from the Chicago trip. I have several female chaperones signed up already. We will need a minimum of 4 male chaperones on the trip. Please check your schedules and consider going. It is a very packed but fun trip. It’s a lot of fun to be around the 8th grade at that time of year.

Please remember to continue selling tickets for the Giggles comedy show! The ticket prices will be $10 each. Please remind the people that there is a 2 drink minimum, soda is included in the options. Let them know that the drinks do not count until the show actually starts. If you are able to sell all 12 of your tickets and have more names please send those names to other classmates. If you need names, please let me know as soon as possible so that I can get that information out to people. We will need the money turned in by this Friday, September 18th. Some students have already turned in some orders. I will need it by then so that I can turn it in and get the tickets and order forms back to people for distribution. We are hoping to sell them at Open House on Tuesday as well.

We sing in church for the first time on Sunday, October 11th at the 10:45 am service. Please meet in the balcony after the 9:30 service lets out in order to warm up our voices. Check your open house packet for our four other singing times and please mark them on your calendars.

Continue bringing in pictures for the Graduation CD. We need baby pictures first, about 10-15 pictures age birth to five years old. After that, we will need any school pictures from earlier grades especially field trips and class parties. The students will start to scan them right away in computer classes. I would recommend using some of the time over the weekend to look through some of your pictures. I just briefly touched on this in the Open House Packet so if you have any questions please email or call.

This week we will study:

Religion:         We will study the four Gospels and how God used the writers and their experience to tell Jesus’ Story and the plan of salvation God had for us.

Confirmation: Memory work #2 Commandment #1(p.55), Memory Question #2(19), John 3:16(#34), Deuteronomy 6:4(345)

Literature:      We will continue our unit on Mythology and start reading in class the novel The Trojan War.

History:          We will continue note taking starting with Chapter 18.

English:           We will continue to look at types of sentences, subjects and predicates. We will most likely finish this week and have our first English test one week from Wednesday.

Geography:    We will do an overview of a United States map and US Geography. We will study the United States in sections. We will begin with the west coast.

Spelling:          We will have a pretest on Lesson 3 today. We will have the test on Thursday and their spelling contract will be due on that day. Below are the Lesson 3 spelling words.

8th Grade Tuesday Letter

September 8th, 2009

I hope that all of you enjoyed your long weekend. God gave us such beautiful weather to enjoy as well!

I would like to have students that do not have access to many people to have an opportunity to sell tickets on Sunday mornings by the scrip table. I still have times on September 13th, and 14th if they would like to sell at church by the scrip table. Try to sell your 12 tickets and turn in the money for them by the 15th.

4. Make slides December 17th

5. Proofread and finalize Presentation December 22nd

6. Present Slide Show to Class January 11th – 15th

Expectations:

Select President – Pick a United States President to research. 7th grade will chose from George Washington through Abraham Lincoln and 8th grade will chose from Andrew Johnson through George W. Bush.

Research Questions – Each student should decide on 4 – 5 questions to research about their president and his presidency. These questions will focus the research and should be the topic of the slides in the presentation. A typed list of questions will need to be turned in on the due date.

Research the Task – Each student will do their own research and will need at least two text sources and one internet source. Every student will need a typed bibliography. I would suggest typing it in Word as you do your research. Using note cards, you will need to turn in your information for the questions you are to research. I would expect 1 - 2 note cards per question. Each note card should have the question at the top, the information in bulleted form, and the source for the notes. When you turn in your materials for this due date, I will expect the note cards and a typed bibliography.

Make 10 - 12 Slides – Each student will be required to make and custom animate 10-12 slides for the presentation. This does not include the title slide or the bibliography slide. Proofread and Finalize Presentation – Students will proofread and finalize their presentation. Each student will need to make a title slide and a bibliography slide. The bibliography slide must be in the correct format. Each student will need to decide on slide transitions. This will also be completed in the computer lab.
