END OF 1ST QUARTER

Today marks the end of the 1st quarter of 6th grade. I will be working on report cards this weekend. They will be sent home on Monday, Nov. 9th, and I will be meeting with you to conference about your 6th grader’s progress and goals. I welcome the students to be part of our conference if you would like them to be ther e.

READING

Notice that in our subject area section I mentioned that we would be reading “Courage at Indian Deep” for the next 2 weeks. These are short weeks of school, so we will not be doing a Spelling Unit, and we will be focusing on work revolving around the themes of this book – courage, bullying, and friendship. This book can be counted for Reading Log pages since we are reading the entire book.

MEMORY WORK – CAN BE SAID ANY TIME DURING THE NEXT 2 WEEKS

Who receives this sacrament worthily?

*Fasting and bodily preparation are certainly fine outward training. But that person is truly worthy and well prepared who has faith in these words: “Given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins.”

* But anyone who does not believe these words or doubts them is unworthy and unprepared, for the words “for you” require all hearts to believe.

READING LOG

The end of 1st Quarter is Friday, October 30th. That means that the final day to hand in reading logs for this quarter is Tuesday, October 27th. Remember, the reading log grade is averaged into the Reading grade with the same multiplier as a Unit Test (x 2). To average in an A there needs to be 500 pages (50 sentences) recorded in the Log. The grade B requires 400 pages ( 40 sentences), a C requires 300 pages (30 sentences), and a D requires 200 pages (20 sentences). Anyone with less than 200 pages in their Log will have an F (x 2) averaged into their Reading grade for 1st quarter.

UPCOMING TESTS

Tuesday, October 27 – English Test on Unit 2

Wednesday, October 28 – Science Test on Chapter 1

Thursday, October 29 – Spelling test on list in planner

MEMORY WORK

*What is the benefit of this eating and drinking?

These words, “Given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins,” show us that in the Sacrament forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given us through these words. For where there is forgiveness of sins, there is also life and salvation.

*How can bodily eating and drinking do such great things?

Certainly not just eating and drinking do these things, but the words written here: “Given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins.” These words, along with the bodily eating and drinking, are the main thing in the Sacrament. Whoever believes these words has exactly what they say: “forgiveness of sins.”

WORLD’S FAIR

Our classroom project is coming along nicely. During our presentation we would like the boys to wear their Beijing hats and the girls to put chopsticks in their hair. We will need a couple of extra Beijing hats for anyone who can’t find theirs, or who wasn’t here when they were given.

BIOMES

Be sure to take a look at the biomes that the 4 groups put together in class. They really are good representations of the different climate regions.

MEMORY WORK

What is the Sacrament of the Altar?

*It is the true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ under the bread and wine, instituted by Christ Himself for us Christians to eat and to drink.

Where is this written?

*The holy Evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke, and St. Paul write: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

*In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Secondly, we will be working on making biomes in groups, so the students will have to bring items from home to fill the biome. All items will be returned.

MEMORY WORK – ( Divided into 3 sections)

How can water do such great things?

*Certainly not just water, but the word of God in and with the water does these things, along with the faith which trusts this word of God in the water. For without God’s word the water is plain water and no Baptism.

*But with the word of God it is a Baptism, that is, a life-giving water, rich in grace, and a washing of the new birth in the Holy Spirit, as St. Paul says in Titus chapter three: “He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,

*whom He poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. This is a trustworthy saying.”
