- Do I have to have two years of a foreign language to graduate?
- Why do I have to learn Spanish?
Do I have to have two years of a foreign language to graduate? Students do NOT need any foreign language to graduate from high school. HOWEVER, if a student plans to attend a four-year university after graduating from high school, that university MAY require some foreign language study before admitting the student. (Check the school's admission requirements.) MANY universities require foreign language for graduation. MOST universities will give students an entrance placement exam in order to determine at what level of language study the student should be placed and will grant retroactive credits to students who are placed and do satisfactory work in a higher level language course. All of these details can and should be discussed with a high school counselor, foreign language teacher and/or admissions counselor at the university of interest.
Why do I have to learn Spanish? The reasons for learning another language are too many to list. However, the advantages for learning Spanish are more obvious every day. The Spanish-speaking population in the U.S. is the fastest growing population group, and learning Spanish provides a greater opportunity for communicating with others on the job and in civic and social situations. In the world of commerce, understanding Spanish language and culture provides many economic advantages. Learning another language also provides opportunities for personal growth and development.
