Is there homework in band?

Yes, all beginning band students are required to practice their instruments a
minimum of 100 min. per week. We provide a practice charts for each quarter
with space to record the daily practice minutes and then a total for the
week,
plus a running total.

Why does my son or daughter have to maintain a practice chart?

The practice chart is a great way for each student to keep track of how well
they are progressing by seeing how many minutes they practice in a week. The
more a student practice, the better they will become!
The practice chart is what QUALIFIES the student to receive what grade they
are earning in Power Grade.
To qualify for an:
A: Required minutes met, on time and signed by parent/guardian.
B: On time, signed, but NOT enough minutes.
C: No chart turned in.

How are band students graded?

Each student is graded on their practice chart, attendance at performances,
also various quizes and playing tests through out the quarter.
The chart qualifies the student to receive an "A".
A: Required minutes met, on time and signed by parent/guardian.
B: On time, signed, but NOT enough minutes.
C: No chart turned in.
Attendance at all performances is mandatory. (I would equate this to a final
in other subjects.) I realize that there are extenuating circumstances at
times and this should be discussed with me personally or sent to school in
written form.

Where do I rent an instrument?

You must select a music store on your own. I recommend that you ask the
owner if they have a certified repair person, what the rental package
includes, how much money per month, and does the rental money go toward the
purchase of the instrument.

What Method Book do we use?

Essential Elements 2000 Plus DVD, which includes a CD and DVD. (Most
instruments:
$7.95, Oboe/Horn: $8.95, Percussion: $14.95) If your son or daughter wishes
to play along with the CD beyond #58 in the book, you will have to purchase
the other two CD's at an additional cost. ($12.95) However, the DVD has all
of the pieces in the book. (This is accessible on a computer that reads
DVD's.)

When do I pick up my instrument?

All the music stores will bring the instruments to the Middle School for the
Beginning Band Workshop. At that time I can teach the correct way to
assemble and hold the instrument.

What if I play a school instrument? Is there anything that I need to buy?

YES! There is a yearly rental fee for the instrument. If you play baritone
or tuba the fee is $55.00, all other instruments are $35.00.
You are responsible for buying valve oil, rotary oil, reeds, cork grease,or
whatever I instruct you to use at the workshop in August. See the Reed List
