All Reed Instruments
1. You must furnish your own reeds. These can be purchased at a music store.
--Bassoon and oboe players, see Mrs. Sexton or Mrs. Piasecki regarding
reeds.
2. Reeds are expensive and very delicate. If you are renting, a reed case
may be included. If you are not renting, a reed case is a good investment in
the care of reeds. Remove the reed after you are done playing, EVERY time!
Mold can grow on the reed if it is not removed.
3. There are different strengths of reeds.
Clarinets & Saxophones should start with a “2”.
Oboes & Bassoons should start with a “Medium Soft”, fiber-cane.
We will notify the student when they can move “up” to a harder reed.
4. You should have a minimum of 2-3 reeds in your case at ALL times.
Parents/Guardians: Reeds will be broken! Don’t despair! Your
instrumentalist will learn how to take care of their reeds with practice.
For clarinets and saxophones, it is less expensive, in the long run, to buy
reeds by the box (10).
Mrs. Piasecki and Mrs. Sexton do look at instruments that are not working
well, however, we do not have the time to repair instruments. If it is a
simple repair, we will try to fix it, otherwise it is your responsibility to
take it to a certified repair person.
