(AED) AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR UPDATE
We have an Automated External Defibrillation (AED) Program in the School District of Rhinelander. Due to generous donations we now have an AED at Rhinelander High School and an AED for James Williams Junior High. Our goal is to continue to network and obtain an AED for each of our schools, the administration building and an additional AED for the high school swimming pool as well as an AED located near our football stadium.
Sudden cardiac arrest can happen anywhere, anytime to people of all ages. Recently, an Eau Claire North basketball coach was resuscitated and survived, thanks to a defibrillator. The St. Paul Pioneer Press indicated in their news article that Eau Claire North had a defibrillator installed at the school last February at the urging of their school nurse.
With the development of a Public Access Defibrillation Program, we have recognized the importance of CPR and AED training for both students and staff in our district. Placing AED’s in key locations and making sure that people are trained to use them, can mean the difference between life and death. I hope that we can continue to expand our program and continue to promote heart health in our community.
We are very fortunate to have a Public Access Defibrillation Program that was developed through networking with Dr. Mark Banas, our AED Medical Advisor and with Mr. Kevin Schlosser, Ambulance Manager for Oneida County EMS. This program is a true public awareness effort to promote Public Access Defibrillation in our community.
The cost of an AED unit is approximately $2200.00, including the wall mount kit. If you would be interested in donating to our AED Fund, you can send contributions to the School District of Rhinelander Business Office @ 315 South Oneida Avenue, Rhinelander, WI 54501. An AED donation is a great way for an individual or organization to leave a legacy of life to the community.
It is my belief that our district will be better prepared to deal with an emergent situation due to the implementation of our AED program. AED’s create a safer environment for the students, staff and members of the community who use our schools.
