TRAVELING
ON THE TITANIC
After our class read about the
Titanic during our "Journeys" reading unit, we planned a day which we
pretended to be traveling on the Titanic. First we each chose to be
either a first class, second class, or third class passenger who really
sailed on the Titanic. Ms. T-L gave us each a passport, and we
researched the person we were pretending to be. We discovered where we
were going, who we were traveling with, why we were traveling, our real
cabin number, and other important information. Then we went to the high
school drama closet and selected costumes to wear. Before the big day
aboard the ship, we constructed a ship around our desks. We measured
bulletin board paper, created portholes, and cut big letters that
spelled TITANIC.
On the day we traveled, Captain
Smith (AKA Ms. T-L) checked our passports and assigned us our cabin
numbers. Once everyone was on board, we introduced ourselves to the
other passengers. A few of the passengers that were sailing were the
unsinkable Molly Brown, John Jacob Astor and his wife, Madeline Astor,
and Ruth Becker.
After everyone was introduced, we
learned Morse Code. Captain Smith sent us some messages, and we
translated what Captain Smith was telling us. Next we enjoyed tea time.
The crew (some of our parents) served us delicious scones and lemonade.
The first class passengers even had fancy placemats! During tea time, we
enjoyed listening to piano and harmonica selections which were played by
our own classroom orchestra!
Once we finished tea time, we
created postcards for our parents, played chess and cards, and watched a
movie about Dr. Ballard's discovery of the Titanic.
We had a very exciting day that was
filled with lots of memories. Traveling on the Titanic was truly
amazing!!
Research is so fun!!
